  • Friday's Tasks on the XS11

I have been so busy on the weekends I am taking off Friday just to work on the XS11 which I have yet to ride. Here is my list.

    1) Replace all fuel lines and replace gas filters.
    2) Synch carbs with mercury stick.
    3) Connect wing nut on bottom of air cleaner to long screw on top of box.
    4) Check charging at battery.
    5) Replace the Fuse holder (if it comes in), install new fuses.
    6) Clean up auto chain tensioner. Replace cam chain tensioner with auto one.
    7) Check petcocks for gas flow/position. Replaced gas tank with one without dent. Replace the petcocks and gas indicator from old tank.
    8) Replace mid/rear gear oil.
    9) Remove wind screen from bike.
    10) Check all nuts/bolts, especially engine bolts.
    11) Install seat and test ride.
    12) Remove pipes and install the Harley pipes (need adapter).

I might not have time for the last one. This is all I can think of right now. I am sure it needs more.

I want to thank everyone who has help on this project.

My list has already changed. The tank I was going to use is flacking inside from the coating someone used. I am going to pick up a XS1100 Standard Tank to see if that will fit on the bike.

The Standard tank will fit the Special mounts, but the seat-to-tank alignment will not be the same. It will not look correct. May want to consider removing the current tank liner and replacing it.

Do they make something that will remove this liner? Thanks for the info.

Acetone, available at most hardware stores, will remove most things..... You will need to remove the fuel petcocks and sending unit so you don't kill the rubber. Should take about a day to get it all done, mostly soaking.
            Oh, and WEAR PROTECTION!

They still sell acetone? I will have to check with Ace.
Everything is already removed from the tank.

              Thanks.

Oh yeah they do. And, it easily eats through Lexsn if you ever decide to clean your figerprints off it before a customer comes to see a run-off of their $million dollar machine

I am finished for the day. Got the gear oils changed. Installed the auto chain adjuster, synchd the carbs, checked timing, replaced all fuel lines, replaced brake lever and adjusted, replaced front brake fluid, removed luggage rack from bike, removed front wind screen, and took it for a short ride up the street.
I have a question on the fuel system:
This bike does not have the octy. It looks like the petcocks are new. Gas comes out on all pri/res/on. I did not check but I wonder if pri and res use the same spot, can I just plug this and only have one line for each carb (no T's)? I have fuel filters installed and I ran the right carb to the left petcock and left carb to right petcock. The problem is trying to get the kinks out of the line. I am using yellow 1/4" ty fuel line and it seems to kink easy. Is there an easier way to run the lines so no kinks happen?

                  Thanks guys.

I got the fuel routed. Thanks XS11. I blocked off the primary. So no T's. I used XS11 route and it works great. One more thing off my list.

Took it for a test ride. It is not running on all cylinders. Feels like it is starving for fuel. It did kick in once and ran very strong. It looks like I need to check the carbs/firing, etc.

The pickup coil wires under the left cover are small and prone to breakage inside the insulation. This has the effect of cutting spark to two cylinders and feels very much like you describe. Occasionally they make connections and pull strong. Place the individual wires between your fingers and tug gently along the length. If it stretches anywhere, there is a break.

Use a small, finely stranded flexible wire for repair similar to those in voltmeter leads.

Debate ensues as to whether crimping or soldering is best.

I did notice when I had the cover off the wires looked very flimsy. I will check those first.
