  • Back on the project - Need help with piston rings

Well I've been out of action since February due to a foot injury. It prevented me from standing for more than a few minutes in one spot. As a result, my project bike has sat for four months. I also had to fix the primary vehicles before I could justify working on the project bike.

I feel I'm only a few days away from riding this thing but I still have problems with burning oil. So I removed the head and found oil in #1 and #4. #1 had a the most. I also noticed that #3 had a slightly bent ring so it didn't freely fit in the piston. Probably an installation error my my part and I may have messed up all of them in some way or another. All the valve seals were good.

Anyway, I guess I need new rings. Anyone have a source out there? I saw some at boats.net but the price was high. I saw a set on ebay from china but I'm unsure about them.

I'll also deglaze the cylinders before putting them in. So I figure I just need the standard set.

As always, your help is appreciated greatly.

This is the place I got mine from. If I remember correctly, you can contact them and see if they can get you some for the 1100. http://metric-cycle-parts.com/index....2df2af712da94d

Wouldn't hurt to see if they can get you some.

Thanks Marty. It's feeling much better but I still have a ways to go.

It's the right ring set (3J2-11610-00-00) for the standard bore. Price is still a bit steep. I'd like to get 4 sets for less than $100 if I can.

I feel if I change the rings I can also improve compression at the same time. I don't want to open it again.

I bought a set off of EBay for about $45 for the set. I just finished the install. I will let you know how they work out.

Is that for all four cylinders? Do you have a link to the posting? How long did it take for them to arrive? Thanks

The reviews on them are pretty good with excellent comments on the rings people bought.

I went ahead and ordered them with a gasket set all within my budget.

Since the items are coming out of Japan, the delivery time should be shorter than places like China. Our logistics pipe with Japan is well established and the customs is streamlined more on both sides.

                      Thanks for the help everyone.

                          Thanks,

Since I ordered the gaskets as well from them, they discounted the shipping after the fact and gave me a partial refund.

Refunding money to a customer after the fact without being asked (I was going to send him a note today) is usually a very good sign that the seller is consumed about building relationships. Since we are in different countries this makes it even more special.

I also have a tracking number that shows up on Japanese Post EMS. Also a good sign.

Wow! The piston rings arrived today from Japan along with the gaskets. So I got them in 3-4 days. I'm impressed.

I spent the last couple of days removing the old gaskets and touching up the paint on the head and cylinders. I also deglased the cylinders and got a nice crosshatch pattern.

So once I get finished babysitting my granddaughter, I'll put it back together.

If I don't screw up I should be moving by next weekend.

I spent a few years in a small family owned engine machine shop. Given what you are going thru it may behoove you to find one that will inspect the cylinders with a dial gage (probably for free) to make sure rings are all that's needed. Just peace of mind that the cylinders are still true. If not then rings will not fix this.
