    SG Jet Needle ?

I'm rebuilding Jeff's carbs and I've noticed, by the screw heads, someone has been into the jet needles.

CMIIW but the gap in the clip-washer-plastic gizmo is not supposed to be there as it will allow more fuel to the mix:

Also is this the correct order for these parts ?

Nope, springs flips around other way,IIRC. That's what holds everthing down in place, resolves the play that you were concerned with. If it was other way around prior, likely was PART of the running issue.

So install the spring in the barrel first, under the plastic piece ?

And yes, this is how all 4 were when I disassembled them.

Edit: Or do you mean just flip the spring 180 degrees where it sits ?

Just flip it so smaller coil end is against clippy. When all together and in slide you see that pushing up on metering rod is the play U were talking about. Spring pressure keeps that from happenin', as there's no 'mechanics in a can' in there with pesky fingers playing with things when all is installed.

Just took apart my other set of later carbs and the order of parts for the jet needles are plastic piece on bottom - "e" clip - washer - spring - hold down plate, which makes sense as the hold down plate secures pressure on the spring against the washer against the "e" clip against the plastic piece to fully engage the jet needle into the needle jet which wasn't happening with Jeff's carbs and NO amount of tuning would've got them running correctly.

Thanxs for the reply motoman got me thinkin' and I had to run back out to the garage so I could call it a night

I thought that was what you were referring to but on a second look the spring is the same size both ends so the washer takes care of that.

Hey, a spare XS to pull apart for comparison works too!

I don't trust Yamaha 100% because I know for a fact that some of their parts diagrams/lists are wrong but they did get the carburetors right on this one.

Yup...as I stated, couldn't remember for sure, unless I had one out again. Just knew that play was taken care of by the spring if assembly order was correct.......and don't imagine it would hardly run at all if FUBAR'ed previously.

BTW Schming, if you still got those metering rods out, take a magnifying glass(unless your eyes are better than mine) and look around on the side at the top of those rods and see that their 5GL16 metering rods. Those were on the 80-81 Specials and verifies that they ARE in fact Special carbs. Jetting IS 110mains across all four if that's the case. The Standard used 5NZwhatever rods and had staggered 115 outside cyls. and 120 inner two cyls. mains. That nonsense can be dropped in those cases and run 115's across all four.
Point being, the Specials and Standards, 80-81 had way different metering rods. Those in pic look to be the longer pointy ones of the Specials.
