  • Gas leaking from U joint boot

    So, how screwed am I?

Over the winter, the crankcase filled with gas.
I drained it, changed the filter, put new oil in.

Today, I rode my bike to work for the first time this season. About a half hour trip.

Now, there's a sizeable amount of gas and rotten smelling oily liquid on the ground. It's coming from the nipple on the bottom of the u-joint boot.

I've got a trip next week on the 14th to Kentucky. It's my only bike trip of the year. Really hoping I'm not going to miss it.

Probably what leaked from the tank over the winter went into the swing-arm as well as the crank. I would drain the middle drive and refill it, and pull the rear wheel off, then take the 4 bolts off and pull the final drive as a unit. You should then be able to clean everything out, re-grease the splines on the final drive with moly EP grease, and re-assemble. That SHOULD take care of things, but a good inspection IS in order.

      Thanks Ray.

I'll get on relubing the whole kit and kaboodle.
      Just printed out c-bugs dipsticks.

I'm at work, so tools on hand and resources are limited.

            Thanks, Ian.
Here's hoping I can get over to your side of the state this year for a ride. I have some friends over there at checkered past motorcycles in Galesberg.

I think Ian's side of the state is about 20 miles north of you.
