  • bike hit while parked

Walking to my bike after work today I see a car pulling out and it hits my front tire and knocks my bike ino the vespa beside it. The impact sheered the bolts that hold the ignition/steering lock unit. Wondering what the procedure is remove the upper triple tree so that I can remove (easy out) the broken bolts so I can reinstall the unit. I am hoping the steering lock mechanism is not broken but I can't confim that yet. I have the factory manual but cant find that specific procedure. The vespa that broke the fall took a worse beating.

    Thanks

If I get a new ignition switch can it be made to work with my key or do I have to now buy new ignition switch, gas cap, side cover and helmet lock to have it all work with 1 key?

The locks have to be changed. I think the new lock can have the tumblers (or whatever their called) moved to match the old lock.

Should be able to swap the cylinder with tumblers from the old to the new. Leaving the key in is the only way to remove and you still need to push that locking tumbler at the bottom in to release it. If you take the key out at any point before installed parts will fly.

can anyone give some insight into replacing the triple tree? 1 shop I called said $400 cause the whole front end has to come apart, the other shop said $100 and the whole front end doesn't have to come apart. I just want to get a good idea what I'm dealing with so I can tell the lady how much she owes me.

If your only replacing the top part of the triple tree

4 bolts to remove the handle bars
                  Remove the steering head bolt
loosen 3 bolts that clamp the tree to the forks and steering head
2 bolts to remove the gauges
2 bolts to remove the ignition switch.
Pull out top tree and remove broken bolts. (or replace top tree)
Remove the head light ring and pull out the headlight
                  Swap in new ignition switch.

                  Put all back together

If your fast all can be done in 45 min... if your like me (easily distracted) about 2 hours

                  Top tree - $30~

If it just sheared the mount bolts for the ignition, you should be able to get them out somewhat easily. When you put the front end back together, there is an order to tighten the bolts. YOU NEED to follow that order, or the bike will NOT handle well!

just got a $200 e-transfer to cover the damage, seems fair to me.

                            Hi Kev,'''
As long as you are satisfied that's all that matters. Do check the triple tree for any other damage/ cracking.
