I use just a VERY LIGHT smear of Yamabond #4 on mine. The non hardening Permatex is close, and will work as well. I stay away from the silicon anymore because of what I've found on tear downs. It tends to leave bits floating around in the engine after a while. NOT what I like to find.

Those thin paper gaskets can gradually disintegrate and give you a hard to find vacuum leak. I took my boots off, scraped off the paper, and used copper RTV because I had it on hand. So far, so good.

Throw away the gaskets and do as DiverRay said.

I just did the same thing Ian, but the gaskets coming with mine look like a blue fiberglass material. Is this Yamabond #4 stuff common? There is a local Yamaha dealer I may check tomorrow and see if they have it.

Everybody should have at least one tube of this, I keep 2. One at work and one at home. It works well on automotive applications also so it's part of my toolbox at work.

Greg swears by the 1194, as he should- it's proven itself for him, even in auto applications. However, for myself I find myself buying Permatex's "The Right Stuff", for every gasket application. I smeared those on the boots and installed them.

I did however buy a new valve cover gasket, and sprayed it down with PAM.

                        Intake man gasket?

The rubber intake manifolds between the carbs and engine have a gasket? Didn't seem like it when I changed them the old ones were leaking and loose on #3

Actually, only the aftermarket ones do. Stock had an "O" ring molded into the rubber, and didn't use a gasket.

Just curious, are the NOS boots significantly better (or worse) than the aftermarket? They seem to fetch a pretty penny on Ebay, and wonder if it's worth it for 30+ year old rubber...
