  • Inkjet Waterslide Transfer Decals......

Anyone experiment with Inkjet Waterslide Transfer Decals for there bike? I know Ducati used to use them in the old days.

    Example:

I have a design idea for my tank and this Waterslide technique might be the way to go......anyone?

    Here is the process

Can be clear coated as well so only limited by your imagination and ability to create something on your computer to print on special waterslide paper.

        Hey Ian,

Well, I used an inkjet to print my tach gauge faceplate when I did my repair, but it has faded a bit, and that's storing it in my garage most of the time. Inkjet inks just aren't very durable to UV. Laser printers are really like a form of powder coat because they use a very fine plastic powder that's then melted to fuse it to the paper during the printing process after it's electrostatically attached to the paper. SO...a COLOR Laser printer would be needed to get any that would stand up to UV and not fade so quickly.... IMHO. I don't know if the INKJET decal paper will hold up to LASER printing, or if they make separate LASER decal paper??

Yes, they do make water slide decal paper specifically for use with laser printers ...

          Take a look at this:

Yeah, they don't hold up all that well. And finding a glue if you print on any kind of paper that lasts is another issue. I'll be curious if somebody tries this to see how well it lasts...

The waterslide paper already has glue on it... and since it can be clear coated I would think that it should handle some wear and tear. I'm going to put some decals on my tank so I will be the science project. I will do one side with inkjet waterslide decal and the other with laser waterslide decal to see if any difference over time.

Goodness! If that was me, I would not be an experiment. Why not have a sign/banner store make vinyl decals for you, and never wonder if it worked? Vinyl is at-least proven to hold-up.

I dunno' about sticking to a painted metal surface (mine were all stuck to wood), but I have soaked beer bottle labels, pictures from magazines, little torn pieces of brown paper bag (surprisingly cool effect with overlapped edges -- kinda' looks like leather) in a 50/50 mix of wood glue (Titebond II) and water. Once the paper is fully saturated (can't really leave it in the bowl too long but it doesn't take very long), lay it on, pat into place and use a wad of TP to blot up any excess liquid. Let dry overnight and Bob's your uncle! The factory paint on my Special has seen better days (clear coat peeling on the tank; the side panels were faded out YEARS ago). I might try brown-baggin' one of my side panels as a test but I'm sure I'll miss the factory red. (Some very fine cuts might be needed on a curved surface for the pieces to lay flat.)

But nothing tried nothing gained. Keeping in house and it works think about the advantages of duplicating any sticker that exists.....I'm up for some fun and no real down side.
