Specials came with progressive springs. At least, that's true of every one I ever opened up.

I was going by the first post. It stated that the stock springs were progressive and the heavy duty ones were not progressive. Now I don't know??? Does anyone know for sure what the 79 F had as original? Progressive ends or not?

My 79F originally had progressive wound fork springs. This is with the non-air assist fork and no touring package.

My best guess is all of the stock springs are progressive wound. My XS650 has them, too.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm looking forward to seeing how it rides with the heavy duties.

I just opened mine up and the springs were wound tighter at the top. I'm the 2nd owner. My findings seem to mimic what others have found.
