So the tape leaked, and I had black on the silver. Even with 1000 grit it went through! The stripe is going to be a SINGLE silver stripe now. I'm waiting for the silver to dry so I can re-do the black.....

Yeah, my paint job is not perfect either. The good thing is, people look-over it when they take-in the whole bike.

            That is maddening ...

The paint scheme would look so much better with the 2 silver pinstripes on either side of the main silver stripe.

That little detail makes it look so custom ...

Isn't there any other way to keep the pinstripes, but not have the ridge in the paint?

I have a thin, red, pinstripe tape that I'm going to put on instead. It WILL go under the clear coat, so it will not be pulling up.Photo's to follow later this week...

Yes, there is a way to pinstripe

The professionals around here use a pin stripe brush and turn out some amazing work. Not for the faint hearted but fantastic results.

OK, work is getting in the way of painting, but here is where I'm at as of now.
Red pinstrip on, and ready for the clear on all but three parts, the fairing and the two metal side strips for the seat. The black is too light on the parts, so they will get a clear coat after a little more black.

The good side of the fairing.

Rear box top, and one of the lowers for the fairing.

                  Rear seat cover.

                  Tank.
So that's it for now. I have about 1 week to have this bike running and looking as good as I can get it. The "Gathering at the Quail" for motorcycles is next weekend, and this bike is entered. This is the Pebble Beach for motorcycles on the west coast. I'll probably come in last, but I've done EVERYTHING on this except mount and balance the tires. I WILL hold my head high, because I DIDN'T spent 10K on a restore, and I DID do it all!

That makes sense; I guess that's why your bike looks like that, and mine looks like...well, mine.

That looks excellent, Ray! Makes me want to put stripes and other embellishments on my '79 now too.

Getting down to the wire! I WILL ride this Friday, and again Saturday to the show!

Here is the Mock-up. I should have it running Wednesday.

And here is a shot from the back. Work keeps getting in the way of getting it all together!
                          Wish me luck!!

OK, now that I have recovered somewhat, here is the final tally:
Thursday evening about 7:00pm, ready for my first test ride

I rode about 12 miles, and filled the tank in preparation for the early morning departure. When I got back, it was back to work getting more of the bike together!

Up at zero dark thirty, and made it down to Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley for the ride! I grabbed a cup of coffee, and some breakfast and was ready to go!
Turn 5, gate open, getting ready to do 2 laps around the track!

I did one good lap, and had a clutch problem half way around on the second lap. I was able to get off the track and fix the problem in about 5 minutes.
The neat part, being passed like I was stopped by a newer V-Max!! They are REALLY fast!

Parked at the first stop, Talbot Vineyards.

And Saturday, on display at the Quail!
The build is ALMOST done, as I have some more to finish the bike. Good news, I did NOT place last!! Great news, an XS1100 was shown and judged at the Gathering at the Quail for the first time, as far as I know!!!

I couldn't stand it any longer -- had to fire up the ol' girl and idle down the street a bit -- 12 years expired plates and all Front shocks are leaking *bad* -- oil running down on the calipers, etc. -- thinking I should get them rebuilt first? And then do the MCs and calipers? She doesn't seem to be smoking like she was the other night (on the way home from Tyler's garage) . . . still want to do the SeaFoam routine, change the oil and filter -- waiting for payday once again The old tires are hard as rocks . . . I definitely won't be doing any SPEED until those bad boys get swapped out.
