  • XS11 '79 special ignition advance

I had a crash that took my bike out of commission for awhile. Basically, everything under the left engine cover was destroyed. I am having a tough time sourcing the correct parts, as I am getting many different results. For the '79 special, which model ignition advance am I looking for? Also, the wire going from the advance, under the drivetrain, to the fuse panel location under the seat, what is that wire called? I am having a tough time finding this information.
79 XS11 special "Loki" - homemade 4-2 exhaust, pod filters, rebuilt forks with progressive springs, tkat fork brace, progressive shocks, rebuilt all brakes and MC's, rebuilt carbs with #142.5 main and #42.5 pilot, a custom front and chin fairing, and a handmade set of saddlebags....

Basically what your looking at is the pickup assembly (2h7-81671-10-00) and the govenor assembly (2h7-81653-11-00 ) the wires your talking about are the wires from the pickup coils. They are attached to the pickup assembly and it should all come as one piece. You might also need the timing plate as well
(2h7-81672-10-00). Your best bet might be to pm Andreas Weiss and see what he has as these are no longer available through yamaha. I know Andreas is picking up a new project bike on the weekend so perhaps you might get lucky and it will be an SF.

The '78, 79, and 80 bikes each used a slightly different ignition. The pickup coil assembly is the same for all three years EXCEPT for the vacuum advance canister which are specific to each year. The mechanical advance unit (governor) is also different for each year, look here: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37189

The 78 and 79 ignitions can be used in either year bike, just make sure you note the difference in initial timing and use the timing number specific to the year of the governor. There are differences in the vacuum canister too, but that's less critical.

The 80 ignition will fit the 78/79 bikes, but because of the markedly different curve compared to the earlier units AND the different camshafts/valve sizes used in the 80/81 bikes, this curve setup doesn't play well with the early cams and isn't recommended.

The '81 ignition will physically fit the earlier bikes, but is non-adjustable for timing, has electronic advance instead of mechanical, and uses a different control box.

What crazy steve said, get the parts from a 78-79 Standard or a 79 Special and it will run much better than parts from an 80.
