Okay, visualize that the bike is in a storage garage with no lifts, etc. I do have a floor jack and jack stands. The bike is apart, and not going anywhere. What is the best way to support the bike with tires removed? I'm scared to have any pressure on the oil pan. Is that a legitimate concern? I'm thinking of cutting a bunch of 2x4's and running them parallel to the cylinders . . .

Lol, I used the lighter one of those for my engine when it came-out, and it split right down the middle. Don't ever try to load ur XS engine on those cheap carts with the handle either!

Yeah, didn't think about that. The whole front end is off that bike, but i've had good luck with those dollies.Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

If the engine is in the frame, do NOT worry about the oil pan. If it's going to just sit in one place while you put parts back on, Jack it up and use a 2X4's to support it. Lift from the balance point with the jack out one side, and put the 4X4, or 2X4 stack on either side of the jack. I almost always put a short 2X4 between the jack and the engine, to keep from marring the bottom.
Your other option is a com-along from a rafter. Loop it around the front and rear of the frame, and lift. That is how I picked up the frame/engine of the '79 to put the forks, swingarm, and wheels back on it.Ray Matteis
