I'm trying to install an 1179 kit into my motor. I checked all the ring end gaps and have plenty of room. Top is 0.019 second is 0.017 and both compression rings are 0.016. The issue I'm having is when I put the expander ring in, it has little tits sticking up, that prevent the compression rings from closing enough to slip into the jugs. Alone it seem oversized to the diameter and if I put it in snug to the slot wall, two full ribs overlap. I know that there is some crushing that takes place but I have a piston installer (big smooth adjustable sleeve) and it won't even compress those rings enough to fit into the jugs.
My question is: is it ok to cut the expander ring down just enough to allow the rings to slip in, provided I maintain the meeting end profiles or should I slip a a plumbing gear clamp over the assembly and try to pre crush the rings down enough to fit.
