  • Weisco pistons

I'm trying to install an 1179 kit into my motor. I checked all the ring end gaps and have plenty of room. Top is 0.019 second is 0.017 and both compression rings are 0.016. The issue I'm having is when I put the expander ring in, it has little tits sticking up, that prevent the compression rings from closing enough to slip into the jugs. Alone it seem oversized to the diameter and if I put it in snug to the slot wall, two full ribs overlap. I know that there is some crushing that takes place but I have a piston installer (big smooth adjustable sleeve) and it won't even compress those rings enough to fit into the jugs.
My question is: is it ok to cut the expander ring down just enough to allow the rings to slip in, provided I maintain the meeting end profiles or should I slip a a plumbing gear clamp over the assembly and try to pre crush the rings down enough to fit.

You might want to call Wiseco and ask, but I'd cut the ring down to get at least the same end gap as the others. That ring (that goes between the two oil scraper rings) is there to retain a measured amount of oil to lube the cylinder wall as well as allowing some place for excess oil to go. It contributes nothing to retaining compression other than keeping the two scraper rings in position.

Also, make sure when the bore was done, they put the taper in the bottom of the jugs! If the bore ends as a strait "L", and not a taper, "\", it makes it a LOT harder to install the pistons..
The bore had a taper FROM YAMAHA, so it should be there AFTER the new size is bored.

        Thanx

I got it, so you can disregard this thread. It was a matter of not having enough hands and not being able to see what i was doing by using the conventional way. I've pulled the jugs back off completely and am working upside down and it was much easier. The pistons fit snug enough that they won't fall out when I reinstall the jugs and pistons with the con rods attached as an assembly. What a pain. I'd give up sex for a fifth hand and my eye sight back!
