Blue, Rred and Black is this heavy enough for the pick up coil s?
I can bring some with me
    Is the original 24 AWG?

You should have 2 seperate sets of readings of 720 between pairs of wires in that P/U coil harness. If not, there is still a problem somewhere.

I'll try again tomorrow, but I only had the one reading. What should I do next? Check continuity all along each wire? Or would it be something else? I can follow instructions, but I don't pretend to understand electrical.

Check the continuity of the 2 wires you didn't get any reading from. Either a break in a wire somewhere or bad P/U coil itself (not as likely).

Yamaha put a splice in the wires, between the pick-up coils and the first connector. I believe the original wires are about 12" to 14", and then change to the 18 gauge wires that connect behind the fuse panel. That is a six connector plug with five wires and an open. Try the two outside pair on that connector, and see what you read.

I noticed that, that the wire was different at the pickup and at the connector (not silicone-insulated at the connector, and different shades of color).

I'll try that tonight and report back.

This worked, about 720 at each pair. Then I put the connector back, and got about the same at the plug at the tci (between the 2 yellow wire, and 2 white wires).

Then you need to clean that connector. You can CAREFULLY pull the female side out, and bend down the two half round tabs just a little to tighten it up. Just pull one wire at a time so not to mix them up.
Oh, there is a VERY SMALL tab on the back, wire side, of the connector that keeps it in place. I use an old carter pin that I file on the one side to fit. Push it in from the wire side, and then pull on the wire and pin.

I tested for continuity, beeps on all 4. I put one probe in the plug at the TCI, and stuck the other in each wire right were the meet the pickup coil.

                    I'll clean the connectors next

Once clean, the bike should run properly. I think the connection may have been the gremlin you were looking for.

I can't get the female ends out. But if I'm showing continuity from pickups to tci, doesn't that mean the connection is fine?

Also I pulled each spark plug out again, I'm still showing spark on each one when cranked. Is there something else I can check?

The female ends out of the molex connector? You need a pin extraction tool for that. Little barbs on the terminals need to be depressed for them to come out. Push from the other end.

Continuity is good, hopefully u have it all the time. Other than your grounds, have u checked the primary, and secondary resistance on your coils?

I don't know how to do that. I found the coils. I have my DMM in hand. What next?

edit: google helped, report back findings in a minute...

Make sure your measurements are compared to a cap on/off measurement. The caps add five kilo-ohms of resistance. Make sure you see source voltage at the coils as-well

1.7 ohms on each primary. Not sure how to do the secondary. The plug wires don't seem like they unplug from the coils.

What's the cap? And source voltage?
