Carbs upside down on the bench with float bowl gasket removed, should be 23mm from gasket surface to the highest part of plastic float bulb. Check both sides of each float and make them the same.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Late model carbs have a "final check" on the float height with clear tubes. Hook up four tubes to the nipples on the float bowels, and with the carbs in the mounted position, let them fill with gas. If I remember, the gas in the tubes should be about 2mm below the top of the bowel, but PLEASE LOOK IT UP to make sure of the specs! It's early here and I'm on my first cup of coffee. Also, I work on mostly early model carbs with my fleet..Ray Matteis

The static float level setting of 23mm will work on your 80carbs.
81/XJ's running fuel level check is 3mm down from outer upper carb casting.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.
