  • Carb indentification

Thanks all for your help with my carb problem and the links to the ID.

It appears that I have late model carbs on my 1979 XS.

so I should be using 110 Main jets and the 1.2.1.2 pilot
    jets.

Here is a picture of what I have.

You have 80carbs.......but from a Special or Standard? Main jetting was different between the two. 80-81Specials had 110's across and 5GL16metering rods. Standards same years had 5Zsomethin' or other metering rods(bit longer/more gradual blunter taper) and used staggered jetting, 120 center two cyl./115 outer two cyl. Metering rods have to be removed from slide in order identify numbering/lettering on the side of rod at the top. Watch that little retainer clip holding metering rod and spring under it doesn't spring into dissapearance when removing. Pay attention to order of pieces when diassembling.

      carbs

      Thanks motoman,
Do you have an idea what heights the floats should be set at?

Carbs upside down on the bench with float bowl gasket removed, should be 23mm from gasket surface to the highest part of plastic float bulb. Check both sides of each float and make them the same.

Late model carbs have a "final check" on the float height with clear tubes. Hook up four tubes to the nipples on the float bowels, and with the carbs in the mounted position, let them fill with gas. If I remember, the gas in the tubes should be about 2mm below the top of the bowel, but PLEASE LOOK IT UP to make sure of the specs! It's early here and I'm on my first cup of coffee. Also, I work on mostly early model carbs with my fleet..

although it looks like your carbs do not have the bowls that are designed to easily hook the tubes up. can still be done but not as easy. Only the '81 and up carbs had that.

.......and was the ONLY model year along with the XJ that necessitated having fuel levels checked WITH bike running. Not running doing a fuel level check is a moot point since not all the internal float needle springs compress the same rate from rising fuel level.

The static float level setting of 23mm will work on your 80carbs.

81/XJ's running fuel level check is 3mm down from outer upper carb casting.
