    Good News!

    ==========
    Just got this word from my mechanic:
    "Fluids are all fresh and I got the spark plugs in. All 4 have good spark! Good news!"
    ==========
    I have yet to buy rebuild kits for the petcocks (a little over 60 bucks total) and he found a place where I can buy the K&N filter pods for not much more than $100. He has pulled the carbs and is rebuilding those as we speak. I'm SO excited over the prospect of hearing this ol' girl blast once again! And then new tires, etc. . . . that's what happens when you let 'em collect dust for 12 years!

    PS ~ Do the pics we post retire after a certain amount of time? Or is my 'puter just being lazy today?

      the pic will show up as long as you still have the pic in Photobucket and as long as you don't move or edit the pic in photobucket. If you move it or edit the pic it changes the url of the pic and it disappears.

          Air Filter Choices

          K&N seems to work, so does the UNI pod.
          It's the metal screen covered ones from Emgo that have a lip in them that needs to be cut out. The lip in them will cover part or all of the air jets in the carb inlet where they mount. Some have made them work by adding extensions of radiator hose to clear the air jets instead of cutting the lips out.

          I was leaning to the K&N's but my mechanic provides this link . . .
          http://blog.perrinperformance.com/fo...-are-the-best/
          . . . which seems to indicate that foam (like the UNI) is better. They're definitely easier to clean & oil than the K&N. They don't look quite as cool (though red foam on a red bike might be okay), but usually I'm more into function than form. What say you?

            If you're putting pod filters on an XS1100 with stock carburetors, it's my understanding that UNI pods get along best with them.

              Good news! In my cursory review of that article I linked to, it sounds like *all* filters are acceptably good when they're clean -- it's just that some load up quicker than others and the foam-style UNIs are the last ones to load up. They might not be as 'wide open' as the K&Ns are when clean but may offer more consistent air flow over the service cycle between cleanings.
              ==========
              I had a foam filter on my Honda 250R trike (no lid on the air box) and it was easy to clean -- simple to saturate with oil, massage it in thoroughly, and squeeze out any excess. Of course, it was a two-stroke so any excess oil would have been dealt with in short order anyway. It's interesting these filters still work when saturated with oil . . . shop vac filters when wet (after market -- designed to be cleaned with water) don't work well at all (air flow is greatly diminished) until the filter dries out.

                need 2 pair

                Hi Jim,
                Here are the ones I've used and will be using when needed, best price I could find too ! http://tinyurl.com/m6547bv

                These are from Amazon and it's for a pair, of course we need 2 pair. They also show you can buy a kit with UNI oil and 1 pair of filters so you would need to buy another pair of filters without oil.
                I checked the box for the 53mm filters, this is what you will need, snug fit.
                Don't over or under tighten the clamps, must be just snug or you will loose 1 or all, surfaces clean of oil, tighten and pull on them to see if they will stay put.
                I don't bother to oil these, my choice, do as you wish, your bike.
                Luck, Don'e

                  Uni pod pk-92

                  I just checked with UNI and the stores they list (not all listed sold these) were much higher in price approx. $10-13 per pair. I even checked Amazon's supplier Powersport Superstore and they are $22 per pair higher on price ? ? ? Better grab em fast. Amazon has free shipping too.

                    Different UNI Filters?

                    ==========
                    The black ones with the urethane end cap are different from the ones I was looking at -- ad expired (had a link to newer listing which I haven't found yet). They were a red foam sock which slipped over a metal internal support cage. Do you just wash 'em with soap and water and let 'em air dry?

                      An old dirt track racer told me the dirtier thy get the better they filter LOL
                      I figure on the street use unless you drive dirt roads or in heavy construction they don't need much cleaning. Might be fun to wash them carefully in some Dawn just to see what comes out ? I would think if they were older the foam might start crumbling but I had them on one bike for 10 years with no problem, like I said I don't clean these much though.

                          Air Filter Pods

                          ==========
                          When I do a search at Amazon for <53 mm air filter> this is the only one which comes up:
                          http://preview.tinyurl.com/o57culj
                          The description says something about chrome end caps but the pics just show black urethane -- either works for me! IIRC, this is likely what was on my bike the last time I got it out of the shop (back in '02). #3 carb started spitting fuel out backwards (visible with the filters removed) and I had no money to fix it at the time. So here we are 12 years later trying to turn back the clock. After all this time, those foam filters were crumbling bigtime -- storing it in a HOT storage unit probably didn't help.

                            Yes the PK-92 was using chrome end caps years ago, now they come with black molded ends.

                                My new PK-92 pods are here! We're waiting on one new 42.5 jet and if the planets all line up just right, we'll be ready to test fire this beast. I know it's just a machine but I'm thinking (after 12 years of collecting dust), she's as eager to ROAR as I am to hear it. We've been close friends since '83 and still only 24,000 miles? Some would say that's barely broke in. My wife rode Harleys in a former life. I can hardly wait to show her what the XS can do -- after putting on new tires and getting the brakes up to snuff, of course!
