  • Oil Question

I recently picked up a parts bike, which has a Kerker oil cooler on it. I'm planning on using it on my 80 special. My question is, how much more oil is required for this application?
    1979 XS1100SF with a Jardine 4 into 1, ZRX 1200 carbs, 82 XJ rear air shocks, ACCT
    SOLD - 1980 XS1100SG with a Mac 4 into 1, ZRX 1200 carbs, round 160 speedo, 82 XJ rear air shocks, ACCT

Probably about 8 oz. The way to do it is after the oil change and install, fill to the top line, start and let the bike run for three minutes, then shut it off, wait for two minutes and check the level again. The level should only be down to the bottom line, so top it off as needed.

Actual shown oil capacity as per owners manual with filter change is 4.2qts for the Special and 4.4qts for the Venturer which has the oil cooler.

What this amonts to on my Venturer without measuring is just covering all the inspection window when on the centerstand.
81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

            Hi Tod,
I guess the newer people have not yet tired of the Oil Question.
In this case a better title might have been. Oil Capacity.

Honestly, I click on it to see if there are any new opinions, and love hearing the old heads. It was Marty and Greg, and a few more of you that introduced me to 20W-50 vs. the Rotella T5 I had been using. No Winter riding, so it'll get changed in the Spring.

Funny...I'm on a few other forums, bike related, and the oil threads are the same everywhere.....always a hundred or two responses.....well maybe not that many but usually a fun read....lots of differing opinions.....

Oh and vanimal....my ol Dad would say, before you put in cooler on, fill it and the hoses up with oil, dump it out and thats how much extra you need...;-)
