I don't see how. The one I put on my bike is a ratchet device. It's going to have to break and suffer catastrophic failure for the chain to get loose. I suppose it could happen, but Yamaha put these in an awful lot of machines. I'm not concerned about that.
This is most likely to happen with the stock tensioner. It's going to get loose if the pinch bolt slips.

It's the manual ones that can be prone to that. The Vmax auto I used has a serious non-return ratchet on it.

Sales pitch and BS really.
Used correctly the OEM tensioners are perfectly OK, some folk like the fit and forget of the auto tensioner which is cool. Some hands on engineering types (control freaks) like myself like manual tensioners.
I worked on 80's Kawasaki's with auto tensioners that gave lots of trouble so I'm biased against them, the Yam ones may be OK.
Anyone have old car ratchet brake self adjusters that wear and back off when you don't want them to? Got sick of having to adjust them up and weld them in place to pass the annual vehicle safety inspection?? (MOT in UK)
Yes anything manual needs you to do work, I do mine once a year whether it needs it or not (15 min job), thrash my engines and have never had any cam chain problems.
The choice is yours, but do it for YOUR reasons, not because everyone else is doing it
