"The automatic adjusters can back out when the throttle is closed suddenly at high rpm. This allows the cams to go momentarily out of time, and can result in bent valves and/or serious engine damage. "
Is this true or common?1979 XS1100F

This is most likely to happen with the stock tensioner. It's going to get loose if the pinch bolt slips.Marty (in Mississippi)

It's the manual ones that can be prone to that. The Vmax auto I used has a serious non-return ratchet on it.XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. Used correctly the OEM tensioners are perfectly OK, some folk like the fit and forget of the auto tensioner which is cool. Some hands on engineering types (control freaks) like myself like manual tensioners.
I worked on 80's Kawasaki's with auto tensioners that gave lots of trouble so I'm biased against them, the Yam ones may be OK.
Anyone have old car ratchet brake self adjusters that wear and back off when you don't want them to? Got sick of having to adjust them up and weld them in place to pass the annual vehicle safety inspection?? (MOT in UK)
Yes anything manual needs you to do work, I do mine once a year whether it needs it or not (15 min job), thrash my engines and have never had any cam chain problems.
The choice is yours, but do it for YOUR reasons, not because everyone else is doing itTom
