On my XS650 I had a slipping clutch (I use only diesel engine oil). On a saturday I took the steel plates to work and sandblasted them. Re assembled and no slip. Then 2 months later I installed new Barnett springs for good measure.

I have used Rotella 15/40 in other bikes and not had an issue but when I first got this bike I tried it and had a horrible slip. Changed to motorcycle specific 20/50 and the slip vanished, at least until the spring weakened some more.

I have since changed to the less expensive Super Tech 20/50 dino oil with excellent results.

I've never replaced a clutch because of slippage, just springs and of course switched to a wet clutch compatible lubricant.

+1 On Greg's, and other's advice regarding the springs. I pulled my clutch basket completely apart, and was surprised to find no rust or burnt disks. So, new springs in (was not easy for me), and I was good to go. There was definitely a noticeable difference in clutch pull with the Barnett's. However, as the season wore on, it became easier. I switch between 20W-50 brands based-on what's on sale at the time. Usually Castrol, Valvoline, or Wally World brand.

As long as the API service stamp looks like this you should be good to go. No additives.

            Thinking back on things....
I did add 1 additional steel plate when I did the 2nd gear dremmel fix.
(semi unrelated) I also did a mod on the clutch. The posts that snap when reassembled incorrectly. I tapped the threads all the way through. Then assembled (out of the bike). Then ran some bolts from the backside with red Locktite, then cut-off the boltheads (so they don't interfere with the case). Now the aluminum posts are reinforced.

I'll probably order the springs and frictions mentioned above.
            Thanks everyone.

Take it out, disassemble it and throw that Frankenstein away and replace the basket back to stock. PM me if you need a clutch basket assembly.

I have a few basket sets laying around too. The bolt from the backside is just reinforcement.
I still wish someone would have bought both bikes and all the parts. Too late now, I'm riding one.

I did just order the Barnett springs.

I don't even understand this at all?? Which posts snapped? What are these screws holding, and if it's the star plate and you assembled off the bike, how do you torque the clutch nut?

Kind of have to agree with Greg on this one, bad as I hate to, because I've never heard of a clutch slipping after the Barnett spring install.

That is very similar (the inspiration) for what I did.
I assembled the empty basket, ran bolts from the back side with Locktite to butt-up against the star plate bolts, then cut the heads off. Took the star plate back off and assembled on the bike as normal.
I did all six to strengthen them and keep the assembly balanced. I did this to prevent breaking a post. I had broken a post on another basket and bought a new (different) basket and did my reinforcement. I still have the broken basket and a whole 'nuther clutch assembly.
I will do the same to the clutch basket on the LG when the time comes. It's just lurking under the cover, waiting.

My .02. My clutch started slipping. Bought OEM Yamaha fibers on Ebay and some Barnett springs. Upon disassembly, the steels and fibers were all in specs but the springs came up short. Clean and reassemble using new fibers and cleaned up steels, all good. No noticeable increase in clutch pull.

A regular lubing of the clutch cable does wonders for clutch feel. Cable lubers are cheap and work very well.
