The engine jig is excellent. Did you make it/have it made yourself?

I wanted to try the bolt trick eveready suggested. I triple nutted the stud and tried to back it out but it's a no go. Rather than twisting, bending or breaking the stud, I opted to file the guides down in small increments until the jugs dropped right down into place. Right now they fit flush along the back but the jugs will rock a bit from back to front. The gasket that was originally between the upper case and the jugs was thicker than what you get in the gasket sets we buy. I have some gasket here that is about.065" thick I can cut to fit. I'm sure that will take the rock from back to front out of it, but my question is, under the same torque spec's, would a slightly thicker gasket in this location affect the function/ timing of the piston in the combustion chamber; given a slightly shorter stroke.

James, I had it made. It's grossly over designed but at the time I had no idea what an engine would weigh. Better safe than sorry. It's great to work off though as I can stand up straight to get at everything.

Are you saying it's the dowel or the stud itself which is giving the problem??

I built a stand from an automotive 1000lb engine stand. I used 1.5" tubing and angle iron. I'll try and post pics later. I can change it out to regular use with the 4 bolts on the face plate, and the tubing is below the engine far enough to remove the pan, etc. with almost no problem. Only thing is when you rotate the engine, it REALLY like the head down and pan up...

65 thou gasket!!!!! wow! you trying to detune the engine? that would lower your compression considerably, its over 1/16".

I use brown wrapping paper about 5 thou thick.

And the only thing that can shorten the stroke is a different crank throw.

If you have an automotive engine stand, you could do this...

                    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37391

You can't split the cases using this, but I haven't seen any stand design yet that allows that.

                      Dowels

James, the locating dowels around the base of the rear outside studs were what was giving me the problem. It's all good now though.

Here you go Steve, you can split the cases with this one. I chopped the bottom out of a junk frame and adapted it with some pieces of scrap metal to a Harbor engine stand. It's positioned so that it rotates as well as any engine on a stand. Recycle and reuse you know.
