  • helpppppp from the boys needed

I have a 80 xs1100sg with a broken exhaust bolt (po) in the cylinder head.....long story short broke the extractor carefully took a week to drill out the easy out ,,(um not so easy) and then put the heli coil in and bolt the exhaust on only to have the diameter fall off on bottom part of hole and helicoil pop out there is a 79 xs1100sf parts bike here for sale complete engine that rotates easily but can I use the cylinder heads off that to interchange with mine??? This is driving me crazy.......help please and thank you

Don't mess with the '79 cylinder head. The '80 is more common and somebody has one if it comes to that. Did you do the machine work yourself? Are you sure you used the correct tap and helicoil? If you end up pulling the head, a machine shop should be able to fix it for you. I wouldn't get in a hurry to source a head.

I used the m8 x 1.25 pitch helicoil ...which I found on another thread and I had that sucker dead center.....that's what is so frustrating.....guess I will be looking for a machine shop locally thanks Marty I appreciate the input and affirming my thoughts on sourcing

Oh and yes I do all work myself.....learning slowly....but I want to make sure I am doing things right because po had mickey mouse this and that. In the middle of doing the carbs and po had rtv in the emulsion tube only to find it stripped out once I cleaned the crap out of it....so waiting on that to be delivered....I am cleaning up someone else's neglect and ignorance

That's why we come here. We can help you clean up the mess. A machine shop will likely insist you bring just the cylinder head. Sometimes you have to cut your losses and call in a professional. If it were me, once I failed to get the helicoil to work I'd likely turn it over before making it worse. I'm not a machinist, but know enough to get in trouble. Did you get the kit that has the tap and the proper helicoil in the same package?

How did you drill out the EZ Out? Do you have machine shop access? That takes a really hard bit.

That's par for these bikes. The dreaded PO usually got rid of it or abandoned it for the reasons you mention.

Holler at me if you need a head, I prolly got one in the pile-o-parts.

Create a Photobucket account. Load them there then link to here by pasting the link from Photobucket. Encapsulate the link with the open img tag and close img tag. You will find the img tool in the post selections.

                      Hey scholme,

I can help you with posting pics. You will need to make an account with one of those photo hosting sites, I use photobucket (it's free).

Upload the photos you want to share to the hosting site. With the photo you want to share highlighted, find the link that looks like a bent up paperclip (possibly attachment icon) and click it. On this page you'll see all sorts of URLs. Copy the url that says it's for online discussion and forum posting and post that url here (exactly as it appears).

The image will be available to us until you delete it from the host site or the hosting site deletes it.

                      Good luck

I've often wondered if an original, trashed stud hole could be welded up and drilled and tapped. Perhaps this would cost more than a used head though? Machine shop work in the USA seems to cost more than here, it seems.

Those studs are a major pain, I reckon. Getting them out can be such a problem and it's tempting to leave them be. But one or two have snapped on here. I know I had a hell of a problem with one stud on my ten year old XJR and it was lucky to finally get it out. On my current project, one of them snapped off when I tried to remove it and the threads were partially damaged but I managed to get the stump out and there was enough thread left to get a new stud to take. Your story confirms my own believe that EZ Outs aren't worth using. You did well to drill it out! So please tell everyone how you did it, with any pix you can upload.

You're in the right place for all the advice needed to keep your bike running.

If you need a head, I have one off of an 81. It is disassembled and you may have to use your valves and at least lap them in or have them dressed up a bit. I'm in Chandler, so pretty close. BTW, I am a machinist too, so if you need a hand I may be able to help fix yours.
