    Strange?

The petcocks had prime reserve and fuel?
    No way to turn Off
I assumed this had an OCTY?
I put a complete set up from the 81 special
Not a huge OCTY fan but it seemed to work
Do you think the PO changed the petcocks or did I botch this one?

Now that I am looking further looks like air assisted forks lines have a tee for one fill is this stock?

      Hey there,

The Standards petcocks are vacuum controlled already, that's why there isn't an OFF, once the engine is off, vacuum stops, and flow valve in the petcock shuts off the fuel.....just like in the OCTY, but it's built into the petcock. That's why there is a vacuum port on the inside of the petcock for each carb intake mount port on each side. The Octy does put a second layer of protection between the petcocks and the carbs so IF the petcocks valve fails, the fuel will still be shut off by the OCTY. However, if the carbs float needles are working right, then they will not leak even if the petcocks do leak. But IF they/carbs do develop a leak it can be catastrophic IF the petcocks are leaking....fuel often will leak forward into the engine and contaminate the oil.

I don't recall any of the bikes having a connected dual fitting hose for the FRONT fork air valves. I think I remember seeing that for the rear on the XJ, but not sure? Someone/PO probably fitted the dual hose to make even pressurizing easier....but I think that can also allow the air to travel across the "T" into the other fork, so on turns where one fork may be experiencing more compressive force, it won't resist it as well because the air will be being pushed into the other fork tube.

Yes, if you're pulling the forks down for the seals, then it'll be easier to get to the triple trees and pull them down to clean/inspect/repack the steering head bearings!

The Standard petcocks, each, have a vacuum port, on the rear, that lets fuel flow only whilst the engine cranks or is running. The PRIME selection, of course, will flow fuel without the vacuum assist.

On my '80G the vac lines to the petcocks hook up to #2 & #3 intake boots and the fuel lines go to the carb fuel tees, only I run the left fuel line to the tee between #3 & #4 carbs with an inline filter and the right fuel line to the tee between #1 & #2 carbs with a filter also. I leave enough fuel line to remove the tank without disconnecting if I need access underneath. I can also turn the tank backwards and place it where the seat sits to synch the carbs.

The XJ I believe had the air fork tee setup.

            Hi T.C.
A hardline T-set-up was offered thru Yammy Accessories back in the day for just that, airing both forks same time. BTW, the pressure balance is equal between the two forks, and that DOESN't change uder load. Fixed axle keeps load equal on forks anyways.

Well I fixed that OCTY mess ugh what a bad move that was.
Everything is the way it should be what a simple system.
This old bike runs very well now Thank you again for bringing this to my attention.
On to the next steps what a good feeling to hear this run so well and the carbs have not even been synched yet

Hit a road block on the project

I am in cleaning rebuilding the brakes they were in bags and I have them ready to install. I am missing the small screw with the tapered end that holds the pads in to finish the installation. It looks like they are discontinued.
Anyone have a source for them? 1980 standard
                Thanks

When working on an XS1100 standard, keep in mind that it shares brakes with the XS650. This means you can look to places like Mike's XS and 650 Central for parts.

                        Hi Gordon,
The brake pads I recently installed cam with new clips and the screw
which was not tapered so i reused my old ones but one could easily grind the thread to form the tapered end.

The XJ did have a cross tube for both the front and rear air-assist suspension. In the rear, a hose linked the two shocks, and only one shock had the fill valve. In the front, the side of the fork tube was drilled and had a o-ring sealed cast 'ring' that sat just under the top tree with the hole for the connecting hose (and held in place by the headlight ear). One side had the fill valve. This was needed because of the adjustable dampers fitted, it left no place for an air valve in the fork caps.

                              Fall Project Complete

Thank you to everyone for your help and support. Thanks Schming for the brake screw. I finished everything discussed in the post late last night. I have worked on it every night since the start of the post.
I still have tires to do otherwise complete. The bike seems mostly original except for the handlebars, rear shocks, Air assist front forks, 160 speedometer and the oil cooler and maybe the mirrors. I was going to put original bars on but the bars on it are not bad I might keep them.

28 degrees here I just went for the first ride this has had in 15 to 20 years

It runs amazing not a sputter smooth fast and unreal what a great feeling nothing like it.

                              Thanks again
