1980 Carbs
I think what has made this carb clean so difficult from any I have attempted
This set has the rubber caps in the bowl. They were just hard black muck everywhere. They have been a challenge to clean out I think some got in the jets and ports. Even the bottom of the bowls its like concrete to remove.
The float needles were all seized I could not free them and replaced.
With this foreign first time set of carbs with the rubber caps is there anything else I might be missing that's different It seemed the float valves were unique nothing else I had was the same size they were slightly smaller in length.
2 things I would like to confirm in the 1980 carbs
1 setting for the float height
2 starting number of turns air fuel screw
Thanks

I've been setting all floats at 24mm, now I find out that I was measuring at the wrong point (highest point of the roundness) it's supposed to be the very highest point that I should have measured at. Never had a problem with running the way I measured, done over a hundred 38/34s ? Put over 55 XSs back on the road that way ? ? ?76 XS650 C ROADSTER

Hi, Gordon -
You mentioned changing all the fluids ... are you including the fork oil in that list?
After 10-15+ years of sitting, the fork oil would leave a lot to be desired ...
Speaking of forks, I would check all suspension components related to the rear shocks and the forks ... don't want any safety issues cropping up ...Marco

Great point on the forks. I am just learning about fork seals.
I just cut my teeth on a small rd200 last week and put new seals. O rings and wipers in. I had a heck of a time getting the seals out it was a 1975 the seals were shot. Hard as a rock I got it all back together and worked well
I will put forks and shocks on the list
New tires will also be added

Good job Gordon, another couple places to lube are the steering head bearings, swing arm bearings, speedo, clutch and throttle cables also the final drive splines.
If your feelin' frisky dismantle the forks and clean all the black crud out of the lowers or, if not resealing at this time, with the bike on the center stand and front wheel off the ground you could take the caps off ( beware of spring pressure) and drain the oil out with the small drain screw at the bottom.
Once drained reinstall drain screw and put an adequate amount of kerosene, deisel fuel or your favorite mild solvent and let sit for a couple days to dissolve the black crud then proceed to flush til clear.
The thirtysome year old crud blocks the small orifices that are responsible for damping and rebound.
You may have to pump the forks to help clear all the crud out but without removing and dismantling it's the best one can do.
While your'e working on the plug caps might as well check the ohms on the coils and the rest of the plug caps to see if they're in spec.
If you need a stock set of coils I have a known good set from my '80G, you may have, as I went with Dynas. I may have the plug caps also but I'll have to check when I get back in town later this week.
If ya run outta stuff to tinker with you could always check the pickup coil wires for breaks
Oh almost forgot, check the date on your tires.1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )

Before you mount the new tires clean up the inside of the rim where the tire bead seals. I use 3M pads but sandpaper will clean off the oxidation. When changing fork oil you need to relieve the presssure before opening the drain plug otherwise the oil squirts out...makes a hell of a mess.
