Running for a few minutes will leave water in the crankcase and exhaust. I used my XS1100 all last winter to to go back and forth to work, 5 miles each way. It was not good for my bike. The oil looked milky from all the condensation. What you'll get from your few minutes running is bearing eating acid.

Don't really know why, but I use Sea Foam in the bikes built before 2000 and Stabil in the later model bikes. In either case I put in the additive, fill the tank run it until it is warm, shut off the petcocks and continue running until it stops. Been doing this for years with no springtime problems.

With all the tanks, petcocks, carbs and other fuel related areas we have to clean weekly on customer barn finds/rebuilds/behind the garage bikes they bring in, dry fuel systems are perpetually miserable to clean/restore to good running condition compared to wet. Last week did a rebel 250 that had been garaged wet without running for 10 years. The fuel had evaporated mostly leaving something the consistency of 2 stroke oil. Carb was smelly but cleaning gooey jets was way better than dry crusty powder-turned-solid jets. Granted one winter won't push the envelope but as stated above, any air leaves room for condensation. I store everything full after a good running dose of seafoam. My $0.02

          Moth balling

I've done it both ways. Just filled the tanks and drained the carbs. No problems on first start up. But this year I've drained the tanks and sloshed a cup of oil around in them, drained the carbs and pulled the batteries and put a tble spoon of oil in the cyclinders and exercised them.Replaced the oil and filter, then bleed and replentished the brake systems with new dot 3.This is what the Yamaha owners manual recommends when the length of storage is unknown. I hope to have the E up and running in the spring and will not be insuring either the 79 or 81 next year.

make it active, you had extra Image and URL tags that messed it up. T.C.

Maybe would be good for part of next years Colorado rally...
