  • Why eliminate YCIS

Got a XJ. Its only a 550 but has YCIS like its big brothers so I figure the question is good here. Apparently, syncing carbs is hopeless without the block off tool. Got a nifty unit off of fleabay. Instructions say you can leave it in if I wanted to. What's the advantage/disadvantage to leaving the tool in? My first concern would be the O-rings burning up pretty quick. Since my 80G is "old school", I aint never had to frig with YCIS.

I believe you will find the

answer you are looking for in this thread. http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19708

the purpose of YICS was to eliminate emissions back in the day not to improve performance. I do not have a bike with that system employed, however the linked thread above states that folks do enjoy a performance gain by the permanent elimination of the system.

YICS was primarily an emission 'fix' and has very little impact on performance other than supposedly improving idle quality. If being 'clean' is something you want to do, then remove the tool after syncing the carbs. Otherwise, put it in and forget it...

Informative if not long read. As the 550 runs now, unsynced but clean carbs, its pretty spry. Doesn't have the explosive acceleration of the the 11 @ 4k but its only a 550. Looks like I will just leave to tool in, sync em up and drive it like I stole it. If the son-in-law doesn't come with with his bike endorsement (stipulation to getting the bike) soon, I will throw some smaller bars on it and a bikini fairing and use it as my "pocket rocket" when I don't want to ride the 11 bagger.

            Maybe someone else will chime

in or maybe you already know. I would suspect that the tool that Yahman sells was specifically designed for the 11's. Is the carb bank the same/interchangeable on the 550's? Just curious as I have no experience with the 550. Thought others/lurkers might want to know definitively before making the mistake of going the Yics eliminator route and it not fit.

carb banks are not interchangeable between 550/650/750 to the 1100 engine. However the YICS tool is, it will work on all of them.
Slow down and enjoy life. If you are in that much of a hurry, you should have left eariler.

Got the "tool" from Fleabay. Cleaned out the YCIS passage (gun brush worked great). Installed tool. Hook up sync gauges. Had em all within a pound in about 15 minutes. Reved good, idled good. Didn't ride it yet cause the battery is toast and I didn't want to push it if I stalled it for some reason.
