  • HELLLP (Odd Clicking sound)

    1979 xs1100 special

Just but it back together after replacing rings, pistons and etc. Had is running rough, would not ideal. Then it began to make a metalic CLICK, CLICK, sound every time the cams turned. I'm having a hard time isolating the sound. any ideas

    Tick Tick

If you do not have a stethoscope you should buy one. The cut rate tool stores have them at very good prices. Short of that, take a long shaft screw driver, place the handle against your ear, move the the tip around holding it a various areas of the engine until you locate/isolate the noise.

Turning by hand or idling? Could be the cam chain needs adjusting?

You DID put oil in it?

Is it a clicking or a tapping. Is it happening when you simply turn it by hand?

You don't have a leak at one of your header gaskets, do you? That will make a ticking sound.
