Also, what does "MP" stand for?
Motion Pro, an aftermarket parts company. Used to be good, now suspect...
You might try one of the parts sites, and see if they list the length of the cables someplace. Measure your cable, and then look for a shorter one. There ARE a VERY FEW shops left that know how to make cables. I used to all the time in the '70's, but have not for a while. HD and custom shops sometimes are able to build new cables in house, and to spec.

A parts guy at the Yamaha and my mechanic said avoid the universals, even if I reused the housing, the solder being untrustworthy.
So I'm wondering if there is a cable from another Yamaha that fits the 1981 XS1100 Special but is shorter?
You could have one made: http://www.barnettclutches.com/cables.html

..........or you could order an OEM cable from Yamaha, keep any lubing products away from it and its inner sheathing liner and it'll work smoother, longer.

Wait... Are you suggesting that we NOT lube the clutch cable?? Seems backward to me.

If a new replacement cable being used.......no lubing. The inner shieving of new cables, OEM or aftermarket is designed to 'wear slick' from cable itself.
If lubing is your choice, I'd use lube specificly for for that application. I had one of the older clutch cables off bike a few yrs. back, and lubed it while off with something other than regualr cable lube. Within an hour the inner shieving swelled up so tight cable no longer slid freely in housing. Haven't a clue how using other than cable lube would affect newer cable inner housings.
