Hey Hammer,
I wasn't dissing YOU, just the idea of using OPEN HEADERS/pipes, as has been covered by many other members here as to their characteristics. I don't necessarily like super quiet pipes either...I like to be able to HEAR the engine perform....just not ear drum shattering damaging levels. I also have an old 4-1 MAC system that sounded a bit tinny to me, so I drilled 4 holes in the end of the baffle/cone plate. That allowed it to Growl a bit more without being obnoxiously annoyingly loud, and I maintained the performance that I wanted and liked. The power band comes on at ~3500 all the way up to redline. I like to run it in the upper rpms a lot. Due to the pipes, it does do a bit of popping on decal, but I enjoy hearing it...Godzilla growling at me and such.
So...just trying to save you from the headache of trying to TUNE open header/pipes for performance that won't be attainable vs. pipes with at least some form of muffler albeit a fairly free flowing type that does make some noise and is not whisper quiet.
SO....feel free to put on open header/straight pipes....hope you can find someone that will like to ride with you. We had a guy many years ago that removed the baffles from his Mac 4-2 turnouts, we called him Harley Dave, and we MADE HIM ride at the BACK of the pack/group during our rally runs.
