  • ACCT revisited

When the ACCT craze first started, I was reluctant due to the don't-fix-what-ain't-broke attitude I tend to embrace. When the price of ACCTs began to climb due to new demand, I snapped one up. I eventually changed it out and screwed up my timing because the plunger didn't extend. Before I was done, I bent a valve and had to get deep into the engine.

After getting her going again, the timing looked right but wasn't. Help from this list led me to the fact that I was 180 out, which works, but not well. Into the cams again, then joy.

Lately, I have been using a lot of oil, even after replacing the valve seals, and oil is splashed on the engine. I was puzzled, because I didn't find pools when parked, only splashes on the engine after a ride. I thought my new head gasket must be leaking, but couldn't ID the cause.

I then decided that a weak seal around my ACCT was allowing oil to be pumped out under load and blown around by the wind sheer. I set my timing plate, pulled the ACCT and made a bigger, thicker gasket. I put her back together and tried to start her up. I soon recognized the sound of an engine out of time, the wrong cranking sound and popping backfires. Damn! Another bent valve...or more?

Back to the list. There is a sticky of ACCTs that work, which I thought I had already purchased. Back to Ebay.

Dang LoHo. Fingers crossed for no bent valves.

I just got a pair of '03 V-Star 650 ACCTs. The one I used was from a Venturer...or so the description said...

The one I was using is on the left. The reach looks a bit short.

The 650 ACCT is several mm wider than my "Venturer" one, which might explain the oil leak issue.

        LoHo,

The one you said you were using can't be on the list of approved ACCT's. It looks way wrong. Your new one looks similar to mine. That's the trouble with buying these things used over the internet. You never know what you'll get and you don't really know what you're looking for.

          Hey Loho,

Like Marty said, the Venturer is NOT on the list, only VENTUREs!

Secondly, here's a photo showing the maximum amount of plunger adjuster travel that I showed in my reply to the 30 minute cam chain tensioner mod that DBeardslee posted a while back.

So...yeah, from your photos, the tensioner doesn't look like it was reaching the cam chain guides and so wasn't properly tensioning or keeping the slack taken up! See if the Venturer plunger is ~45mm deep from the mating surface of the adjust housing. if it's shorter than that, then yep it's too short!

I'd stick with the Vmax ACCT. I just fitted one to my latest project and did the same on the last one.

With the cams off, all of the cylinders should be sealed by valves and pistons, right? So if I put a couple of drops of oil in the cylinder and blow air through the spark plug hole, air should not escape.

#1 leaks through the exhaust, #2 through the intake, #3 through the intake, and #4 seems sealed.

Now I've got to go all Henry VIII on her....

BTW, I meant Venture, not Venturer. I'll go back and see what the auction actually said.

I'm a fairly intelligent guy, but I am amazed at how stupid some of my bike moves can be. I knew screwing with the CCT was a mistake, but still...

James, some of the listers have compiled a list of bikes that use part numbers that work. I ordered mine from memory and am now doing penance for my arrogance.

To err is human. It shows we're never too old to learn....(the hard way). The vmax acct's fit well and work as they should but, yes, there is the list....

TC, the one I was using went to 46mm, so I guess it was good enough in that respect.

I was toying with the idea of putting an ACCT on mine but with some of the problems I have been seeing over this summer with the use of them I believe I will stick with my original. Hate to see you are having the problems you are and I hope the valves are not bent. From your last post it doesn't sound promising.

Naw, Jim, I think they are a good idea. I just screwed up and am now paying the piper. I have an extra of the correct version if you'd like...I'll even throw in my old one for free!

I actually have one on hand. I just have not pulled the trigger to install it. Thanks anyway and good luck on the pending repairs.

Final score: three bent intake valves. I have two and am debating buying one valve or buying a head that has four for about double the price.
