Drop the oil pan. It will most likely be in there.

XS1100 how to check flatness (non warped) on the tops of cylinders were the head goes on with all the studs?

            Well,

Without an actual machinist's RULE, you could get a metal yard/meter stick, and use the EDGE to lay across the cylinders in different positions, across, perpendicular and oblique/diagonal avoiding the studs, and see if you can put a feeler gauge between the ruler's SIDE edge and the head??

If you have a large glass covered picture, painting or such, as long as the ruler, you can use it's surface to check the trueness of the metal yard sticks' EDGE beforehand. Glass is fairly stiff and usually quite flat....if it's a fairly large picture, I would leave it standing upright, the glass could flex a little when layed flat at that size!? JAT!

Cylinder warpage is a very, very uncommon problem

It's usually only the alloy heads that warp, not the cylinders.

I found something way flatter than glass, the preformed rolled edge kitchen counter tops are very flat if not screwed down distorting them, I ran a DTI in big arcs over ours at home (whilst the wife was out) it was 0.0015" out, yes 1 and 1/2 thou, you could easily check a head on it using feeler gauges, it would be accurate enough.
