  • Purely Cosmetic But Still...

I did a fair amount of work restoring my XJ over a couple of winters. It's certainly not a show bike but looks pretty good from a few feet away

    [IMG][/IMG]

However there are getting to be a few cosmetic things that are starting to bug me -- muffler clamps, heat shields, brake pedal

    [IMG][/IMG]

    helmet lock --

    [IMG][/IMG]

All the screws (6) on the petcocks --

    [IMG][/IMG]

    Ignition cover plate screw --

The chrome mirror stalks and nuts are also rusting a bit (no pic). I don't have a garage to store the bike in but do have a cover for it (stored inside our farm shop in the off season). The cover fit really well until I put the Windjammer on it, now it won't fall low enough to cover the wheels, foot pegs, mufflers, etc. I know some of you have spent considerable time restoring your bikes so I'm curious as to what you all do to combat these kinds of things.

Most of those fasteners can be replaced with stainless. A little time in a well stocked hardware store should have you all fixed up.

And the surface of the brake pedal.....a wire brush on a drill, and then some metallic spray paint.....OR....you could talk to James England and learn how to replate it with ZINC....that is IF it can be plated with that even though it already had chrome??

          Looks great !

A small brass brush will get in there and clean that little rust up well. After cleaned up a shot of chrome spay paint, might as well use Hi-temp should keep it for a while then use the brass brush again for any unwanted over spray. Slick 50 spray lube should keep the rust away for some time too on those spots that are hard to reach. This stuff works great as a cable lube and keeps rust away on many parts. Done

Slick 50 1 lube does what Tri Flow does (more than 2 Xs the price, $12.99 for 16 oz.) and Dura Lube ($8.99 for 16 oz.) Slick 50 1 lube $5.99, 16 oz.. Bought 2 cans so long ago $s may have changed it's lasted so long, just a drop goes so far but WTF use as much as you want, it's cost effective even still. Anything that needs lube or tends to rust , I'm Done

                  Hi Billy,
My Maxim was looking so sad and RUSTY I washed it and polished the chrome.....amazing how easy the rust was to polish off.
Chrome polish and a clean cloth. I know it has not cured the corrosion but it took it from disgusting to hardly noticeable.

                        Evaporust

May douse a little Evaporust on those spots. Let it soak for a while then rinse with water. Let it dry, then apply the paint, Slick 50, or whatever you decide to use.
