  • Venturer VIN

I am looking at a VIN on a 1981H and it looks a little strange. Is it me?

    Number is: JYA4R100 4 BA002002

    Anyone know what this is?

    Thanks, Mike

Don't know where the JYA came from but 4R1 is the Venturer prefix. Does the VIN on the title match?

Hi Greg, I agree that the Venturer VIN starts with 4RI. Will have to enquire about the title match. Have no idea about the JYA?

The last link I put up didn't go to the right page. All vehicles built from 1981 on had to have a 17 digit VIN.

Hi Greg, which tab are you referring to on that link?

I did find out that the engine number is 4R1-002002 which is the last part of the aforementioned VIN.

OK. Got it. Everything is a lot clearer now. Interestingly, this particular Venturer has the 17 character VIN and a Venturer that I have has the 4H1 VIN designation. I guess a few slipped through the cracks in early 1981.

Thanks for your help on that. I owe you a cold one.

I bet if you check the production dates (on the sticker on the steering head) the one that has the shorter VIN was built in 80 and the one with the longer VIN was built in 81.

                  Hi Greg & Mike,
I will have to check Addie's manufacture date.
I know I had a hell of a time convincing my Insurance company that it only had a 9 digit VIN. I had to take pictures to convince them.

Pre-81 automobiles had the shorter VIN too. Screws with the computers nowadays.

                        Hi Phil,

Had to do the same. Insurance company told me that the VIN that I gave them was wrong. A picture convinced them.

JYA just means "Japan, Yamaha Corp" for the long form VIN.

You can convert a short form VIN to long form..

Here's some relevant info.. More specific to XJs, but works in this case: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html

Agreed. That's a lot of ciphering. Glad to "remember" that the VIN rules changed in 1981 (thanks to Greg). I had forgotten about that. I assumed that it applied to cars and trucks. Never even thought about if affecting motorcycles?
