U-Joint almost went bye-bye

Whoa, that was a close one! Felt some popping from the driveline yesterday... Took a peek behind the dust boot, and discovered a u-joint that was about to come apart.






All was not lost, though.. Greg/BA80 was kind enough to come to the rescue with a new u-joint! Huge thanks! I'll have a cold brew ready for you any time.

The u-joint-ectomy was 100% successful, via the middle gear case. The new u-joint went right back in with just a bit of prying. I also learned a few things about the bike.. Like, the hinged rear fender. Whoda thunk it?

I had to pause for the evening, but should have it back up and running tomorrow. All in all, I'm glad this happened in my garage, and not somewhere on the highway. In a way, this kind of gives me good vibes about the bike. Now I just have to make sure I check all the other important bits, before they decide to take a dirt nap

Greg, any cross reference for an off the shelf replacement u-joint? How many miles on the bike?

Someone just posted a part # for a new replacement on here the other day. Search and you'll find it.

I brought Vlad a complete used unit.

I'm not 100% sure on the mileage.. From what the PO told me, the mill has about 35K on it, and the rest of the bike has "a lot, probably more than 80K". I've never seen one worn out that bad. My XJ750 has almost 60K on it, and the u-joint looks perfect.

That thing looks like it's cracked through the flange for the Middle Drive too! The bike may have been bottomed out hard when it was under load and something had to give. While you have it apart, check the back rim and the driveshaft splines to make sure they're alright.

Shortly after I bought my XS, I greased the splines at the Final Drive and discovered that the driveshaft had been ovaled and the splines were getting wiped out. Later on when I was doing my first '750 Final Drive Mod I found the input coupler had also been rocked over hard enough to rub against the case in the Final Drive too. Here's a post, #61, with a couple of pictures of the kind of damage that can happen:-

I checked it out this morning, and I think it's just a scratch mark.. It looks pretty solid, and the middle gear splines look good, too.

Whee! She's all back together, with synthetic lube in the middle gear case, new rubber front and back, and a good u-joint. She's much, much quieter now, and slightly less clunky

Trying to get that power outlet thing figured out. I spent 2 or 3 hours on it today at work. No joy.

I had to stop, turn off my bike, and let my phone charge so my GPS would work to find your house yesterday.

Unacceptable.

I'm gonna check a couple other things tomorrow but it may be the adapter is just too sensitive for the crazy charging system on this bike.

My other adapter worked just fine until it just died.
