    Tire bead breaking technique

    Thought I would pass on a somewhat primitive yet effective way to break the bead on a stubborn tire....Get a soft towel or whatever to place under your rim CAREFULLY put it just behind (or in front)of your car tire, back slowly and CAREFULLY up on to JUST THE TIRE ,...as you drive onto the bike tire ...the rim will lift slightly from the ground..on the side that is not captured,put your cage in park...step on the bike tire and voila the bead is broken sometimes it takes more than one attempt..I have used this technique a hundred times and have never caused any damage and it ALWAYS works.....

      Lol.......you'd have to know Joe to appreciate some of the stuff he comes up with................El Toro comes to mind.

        You could also take your excavator and push down on the tire carefully with the bucket. Don't forget your towel.

        If you don't have an excavator, there is usually one in your neighborhood fixing streets that I'm sure no one would mind you using... just for a minute.

            I used to put a brick on the ground under the bumper of the car or some other heavy object, set the rim/tire on the brick, just clearing the rim, put the pad on a bumper jack on the top, again just clearing the rim, and use the jack to break the bead. Now I just use my manual tire changer from Harbor Freight.

              In the tire change pictorial is shown using a basic large C-clamp to slowly squeeze the bead to break it. Anything is better than doing the "RAIN DANCE" with your feet!

                  I use a similar method. I lay the wheel down. Then I use a piece of 3/4" plywood (16"x24" works fine) and lay it over a section of tire making sure it is not covering the wheel. Then I carefully drive my car up on top of the plywood and it easily breaks the bead. This method is quick and has never failed.

                          One of the reasons I love my vise! Snagged it out of my grandma's house as she was moving out. It was a beefy old thing 6" wide jaws and it opens about 8-10"

                            Phil, jaws about 6" wide & opens about 8". It's a china cheapy that someone bought for me about 20 years ago. I've used the crap out of it.
