How long to break in new pads ? Never had a problem before putting in new pads but on the LH, I've bled the two systems again after a ride last night (found I was not getting the stopping I had with the old pads, still good). Might have to clean up the old pads and put them back in ?

That's what I have on the front of my SG and they work GREAT.
I just changed my rear tire on the same bike and just mounted it on a spare wheel I have, rotor and all, and the rear brake was almost non existent until I burned the pads in good to the different rotor. Work them hard a little bit and they should get better.Greg

Hey Done,
I have copper sintered on my G and when new they squealed like a pig. Nothing I tried helped stop that until I resorted to an old trick my old cage mechanic taught me.
With a hacksaw, cut a groove in the middle of the pad material, almost to the bottom. This will actually give you two pads per rotor side. That got rid of the squeal and improved stopping power as well.1980G Standard, Restored

Mine have no slot and work fine. They started squeaking so I tightened up the hardware where they mount and it's gone.
Pads don't squeal on their own, they have to be properly installed.Greg

Groove
I ordered a replacement set and had the groove cut in them. That puzzled me because the old pads did not have the groove. Thanks for info on what that does for you.2 - 80 LGs bought one new

Hey there Done,
You've already gotten the advice you need, so I'm just adding some confirmation on the burning in of the pads as the problem. When I put my dual piston calipers on my bike with the "USED" pads, it took a few weeks before they got worn in to match the rotor surface. But once they did, they work quite well. Sintered pads are a harder compound so they don't wear as quickly, and are also more designed for racing application, and so they also work a bit better when they get WARM. So....try to avoid Emergency stopping encounters, allow lots of following distance and such!

Anyone had any experience with the Kevlar pads? I have an opportunity to get a set for all around the bike pretty cheap.Greg

Hey done
How are the brakes wearing in? I was just curious because of the mpg problems you are suffering. Was just wondering if when you spin the back wheel on center stand if you feel any friction from the pads. Also a good test to perform on the front. If all is fine with the brakes then I would go back into the carbs for tweaking. Your gas mileage should be better then 27mpg.

I don't ride in the rain, so I can't report about Kevlar-Carbon in the rain.-Mike

As for the free wheeling, I've always had the rear not turn as many turns when I spin it as other 11s that I've had ? This may mean something but I did grease, changed gear lube FT&Bk. Maybe need to dig in further ?
Been working on it rather than riding it, reports ahead.
