  • 79 xs11 special NOW Electrical issues

Hey all. I just purchased a very clean xs11 special for 400 that is all stock and runs with fresh rebuilt carbs that just needs some stuff put back together. Anyways, I have plans of turning it to a cafe style bike and had a couple questions.

First, to get low handle bars I have seen a couple options, the 2 piece that goes to each fork or a single straight handle bar. Which would be the best option to use and could other post pics of their dropped handle bars to give me options of style I want.

Next I am planning on ditching the stock Speedo and gear around it. What is a smaller aftermarket Speedo that will go right on and work just fine. Being off 5 mph isn't an issue but as close to stock readings as possible and not an arm and a leg to purchase one.

I am sure more questions will come once I rip into the bike.

To run an aftermarket speedo with anything that resembles that resembles accuracy will require ditching the drive and cable. There is no aftermarket speedometer that I'm aware of that is compatible with the Yamaha drive ratio.

TC installed an inexpensive unit on Godzilla. You'll have to search for that on here.

Acewell makes small acurate meters that replace your tach, speedo, and pilot box. Dime City Cycles and Speed Moto Co. are among the places that offer them for sale.

As far as bars, you'll have to lose the headlight ears to use clip-ons, and procure new "ears" to attach the headlight.

Hey thanks for the reply. Is there no Speedo option that you can place something on the wheel and fork and just run a full digital.

I planned on upgrading headlight so that was in the mix along with the change of the handle bars.

Yes, the Acewell will work perfectly on your bike. Depending upon the depth of your pockets, you may wish to review what TC did. You just won't be able to run your speedometer cable to an aftermarket clock and get any kind of accuracy.

Tarozzi makes clip-ons with risers, if that interests you.

Your bar clamps are an integral part of the upper triple clamp. That may sway you to go with clubmans or something of that sort.

With the risers where can they be ordered. I've done some searching and their site isn't working right and everywhere else doesn't really have the part. I'm assuming the riser is more of a bolt on and if it gives the look like the pic, that's what I am going for.

Clip-ons with risers can be purchased here: Fast from the Past

They sell Tarozzi clip-ons and fork braces. They have XS Eleven rearsets as well.

Google images for Tarozzi clip ons for plenty of photos of bikes wearing them.

Hey thanks for the link. Sorry for another question. I could measure if the bike was here, but what size would be ideal. I see they have a large selection of sizes. Bike will be here tomorrow, just trying to get some parts ordered while I'm busy this week with work.

Forks are 37mm. The height of the riser depends entirely upon what is comfortable for you. I assume you know that.

Yes, I was looking for the 37km. Thanks. I'm gonna search around, check Craig's list and such and see what I can pull off to save a few bucks before ordering.

My fiance wants full handle bars (she's part of the build) and wants something with more shape to it like the pics attached. These are actually labeled for an xs650, 750, 850. I would hope the 1100 would be the same?

As far as foot pegs go. Are they pretty much universal as far as bolt line up and such go. Noticed my backs were pretty much shot.

Foot pegs: They aren't as easy as they look. It would seem like most would bolt right in but they don't.

For the front you can buy adapters from ScootWorks or there are a number of options for the XS650 that will work.

The rear is setup differently and has a few more options depending on the style you go with.
