  • Tank Rust

    XSives,
I want to clean a tank of rust, not bad but still.
I use 5% phosphoric acid and 95% methanol to clean the rust out of tanks before and leave an almost galvanized finish.
I'm not sure if this mixture will damage the fuel level float or any of it's parts (suspect it will).
Maybe I'll need to remove it and block off the hole ?
    Any suggestions please ?
    Thank You ! Done

I removed the sending unit and petcocks when doing a tank for my 80G. Used thin sheet metal with holes drilled to screw it in and cover the petcock holes and the sending unit hole. Used silicon sealer as the gasket material between the sheet and tank.

EVAPORUST won't hurt the sender or the petcocks.

Auto parts houses have it too.

I went to Ace Hardware and got a couple quarts of Jasco prep and prime. Leaves a finish that won't flash rust. Poured in about half a quart, filled the tank up with water almost to the top and let it sit. Can't remember how long I let it sit, but it was more than a few hours and less than a day. Sloshed it around every now and then to get the roof of the tank. Nice dull grey finish.

                Bonz,
It sounds like yours was an acid etch. I think it's probably the best thing for a rusted tank, followed by a liner. For light rust I'd do Evaporust or Metal Rescue, then forego the liner. As Greg pointed out, Evaporust won't do any damage.

My thought would be do a liner if you have thin spots in the metal. Once the rust is gone/transformed, if the tank is cared for normally it wont happen again. But a liner doesn't hurt anything in any case.

If buying from Harbor Freight, don't forget your 20% or 25% off coupon

I used electrolysis for my XJ tank, but it was a very slow process with a significant amount of rust (took a week or more). I also removed the stand filters on the petcocks to let remaining loose rust out of the tank to be caught by my inline filters for easy monitoring and removal. No reserve function any longer, but my fuel gauge works fine.

The next tank I do, I will probably try Evapo-rust.
