  • Do I test resistance at connector or at TCI box?

I get sparks on 1-4 but think they're weak on 1979 xs1100f (my engine won't fire) and found in manual and on this forum is a test:

Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between Yellow/Green and Yellow/Red, and between White/Green and White/Red.

If I pull the four wire plug out of TCI box, my meter's needle doesn't move when I test resistance at the plastic connector between wires listed. I've tried with key on and off.

When I test resistance on the TCI box side I get readings, but, I'm thinking test should be to test wires to the box, not from the box.

Can someone confirm if I should be testing resistance between wires at the plug and not at the TCI box itself?

    Thanks

    At the plug...

Don't know if this is my root problem, but, traced from TCI-end connector to connector out of group of wires behind fuses, and from there to another connector and on to ignition advance. To get readings from last connector (to ignition advance) I have to move it a certain way.

I'll figure out how to solidify that connection and try again.

    thanks

BTW....sorry, I didn't mean to ignore your question. Test the wires.

The four wires,W/R, W/Grn, and Y/R, Y/Grn, go to the pickup coils. You should measure 720 ohms, at the TCI plug, between the two W/* wires, and Y/* wires. +/- 20%, depending on the phase of the moon, ambient temperature, 3 Phase's mood, etc.
If you don't have those readings, check the wiring between the four connector plug at the TCI and the plug on the wires coming out of the left side engine case. There is a connector back under the transmission that the neutral switch and the four wires plug into, then all the wires head up to the main harness. Measure resistance between that plug and the TCI plug, and the resistance between the wires going to the pick up coils. If the four wires are good to the TCI, ( no resistance), then your pick ups are suspect.
Measure them for 720 ohms each. If two of the same base color, Wht or yel, do not show continuity, pull the cover, (there is no oil in there) and start trying to stretch the four wires going to the pick up coils.
I use two safety pins and stick the points into the two wires next to a coil, and measure the resistance from there. If the resistance is good, I know the coils is good. I then measure from each pin to the appropriate wire in the plug, to check the continuity of the wires. If one does not read next to nothing ohms, I know where to start the stretching.
Be firm, you can't break something that is already broken, and if it isn't broken, you won't be able to stretch it. If any of the four wires stretch, ask someone on the board to point you to the thread that describes how to fix them.
If none of the above shows a problem, let us know, and we will have a pow wow, and figure out something else to try.

All great info - thanks very much.
I've found info to help me fix the loose connector/connection and will start there.
I hope to be able to report back by this time next week.

If a makes any difference, I'm in a great mood today... I'll try to keep it that way if it's affecting other peoples' pick-up coils!

OK, but if he has out of spec readings, it's on you.

I have a couple of out-of-spec pick-up coils too so I think I'll have a beer. Hey! I feel better already!

                          Out of spec.

I have two different bikes that the tci only shows numbers in the 690's
The bikes run fine,Maybe there is some of that "magic purple smoke"
That goes undetected on my meters?

Naw, Joe, no purple smoke, it's probably just that you are working under Scott's penumbra.

I have a set of pickup coils off of an SH that look to be in perfect condition and ohm out at about 650. Put them on Rockin'D's SG when we did the frame swap. That bike WOULD NOT START if the temperature was below 50 degrees. No spark.

Put the space heater on different ignition components to test al BEHOLD, heat that left engine cover and it started right up.

Swapped out those pickups with a set that ohmed out at around 750 and he took off and never looked back.

                              go figure
