Well I think I've decided to go against the temp gauge.
Eventually I may do that oil level warning mod though, that looks great!
Thanks for all the info guys.

Hey Dylano- Just kinda curious as to why you abandoned the idea of a gauge? Not that I agree/disagree, but I can tell you that when I was having charging issues on my bike and installed the voltmeter, I was constantly paying attention to it, and it was distracting. I felt like I was constantly looking at that thing, and it made me uncomfortable. Nate has a bunch of gauges going on with his bike, so I wonder how ofter his eyes leave the road and peek at them?

Now that my charging problem is resolved, I ride a little more at-ease. Of course with a 35-year old bike, I still am wondering at what point while riding when I will hear a death clank, etc. Am I being a little too concerned? Probably, especially after hearing some bikes going triple digits on the odometer. But, I can't help that when I Have my helmet on and you hear a strange noise, your first thought is "Oh man . . ."

Well the reason I decided against it is:

For one, I am really trying to keep this bike as minimalist as I can.
So although I normally really want a ton of gauges, and it is hard for me to say NO to one. I'm deciding to say no to it for looks.

Also, when I am driving a car, I am CONSTANTLY looking down and checking all my gauges. I would like to avoid that as much as possible while riding, like you said. Cause I know I wouldn't be able to resist constantly "checking up" on things. I check the temp gauge on my FZR all the time and I know it would be safer to be looking at the idiots on the road. haha

Everyone (not necessarily saying you Ian) seems to think that putting some gauges on your bike is like putting a freaking 90" tv on your bars and you are blinded to the rest of the world. I don't get it! How often do you look at the gauges in your car? Rarely, same as on a bike. If something doesn't hear/feel right you give them a glance. Curious about something under the current conditions, give them a glance. If you don't have the discipline to not stare at the gauges then you probably shouldn't be on a bike...

Actually, I am leaning towards agreeing with you Nate. I hardly ever look at the gauges on my vehicles as long as they're in good-running order. I do have a habit of looking at my temp gauge more-ofter after replacing the head gasket on one of my cars. I have other bikes with electronics, etc., that I never really look at either after going through button presses, etc.

So, I guess the only reason right now that I do not pursue gauges is the fact that I have no fairing to install them in, and putting them on the handlebars looks kinda tacky (no offense Earl).

Can be done very nicely though if you make up a "dash" that blends in. Just takes time and effort.

Agreed. Well said. I like the 90" TV analogy! That had me laughing! I mean, according to some of what's been said in this thread, it's not advisable to wear a wristwatch either as it's so easy to walk into telegraph poles, plate glass windows or indeed out onto the freeway, because of being unable to remove one's eyes from it... Although in my case, I generally look at it when I want to know the time. Same goes for my oil temp gauge......when I feel curious about the oil temp, I look at it. Bit like looking at the speedo when I fancy knowing how fast I'm going...... We don't stare at that all day now, do we?

Nate, time is my biggest issue ATM, and work's taking up most of it. Besides the fact that my bike's had 4 different fairings on it in the last three years with varying amounts of room around the guage cluster, changing from the boxy standard guages back to the more classic Special gauges give a nice spot above the idiot light bank to fit a small housing neatly.

Dylano, mate, the oil warning light would be a snap for you because you have an XJ, and the sump, sensor and all the wiring should already be there for you to hook up.

And Ian, regarding your concern of being distracted by your fitment of your voltmeter, if you're having charging issues and you fit a guage in order to monitor the problem, it's 100% natural to want to watch it to see what's happening. As you said yourself, once the problem was sorted out, your guage staring ceased.
and this bit tickled me somewhat, too

Am I being a little too concerned? Probably, especially after hearing some bikes going triple digits on the odometer.
Mate, check my signature. Does that qualify?

No offense or insult intended. I was only replying to Ian's comment of wanting it to look good and not wanting them on the bars.
