    Vacuum advance frustration

Just picked up a 1980 XS11 Special. The previous owner said that he could never get it to run right. I took it home and cleaned the carbs and changed the plugs and did the basic stuff. I got it to start and it ran Ok but had a hesitation on the acceleration. Then I noticed that the vacuum hose to the timing advance was missing. I put a new one on but every time I connect it, the bike shuts off. what did the previous owner do and how do I undo it?

Have you reset the timing? If not, you should start there. The factory service manual and/or the Clymer manual explain how to check the vacuum advance for proper function. You have the hose connected to the #2 carburetor?

      Mobius,

The pick-up coil wires might be broken. If they are, when the timing plate advances and stretches the broken wires the engine will die because there's no signal to the TCI to fire the ignition coils.

.......and if broken, that'll be internally(try to stretch wire EVERY inch).
Just for grins, I'm bettin' on the white wire, if any found broke internally.

Ok, I'll take that bet. I'll take the orange wire for the win.
