    Walmart oil question

Been using Castrol 20w-50 motorcycle oil in my 80G forever. Any issues with Wal Mart's 20w-50 dino oil? $2.50 a quart.

Have no desire to use it. Quieter upper valve train goin' to Vav. dino from Castrol dino. Haven't used any motorcycle specific on either of my bikes, with no ill results for 30+yrs..

I used it in the past. I can never tell the difference between any oils on my bike.

Does the can have an API standard? Thats what I always check for, if its anywhere between SF up to SL I find it OK, SF was recommended by Yamahaha for the XS11.

It's the same as Castrol GTX dino, SN. Exceeds all API service letters below that. That includes SF and SL. It's better.

I've been using the Super Tech oil for quite a while now. My 3000 mile regular oil and filter changes went from $40 to under $20.

Next oil change, I will try the Super Tech with the Wix oil filter and save some bucks. Thanks for all the input.

                        Phil,

Super Tech's good stuff, especially with 2K/3K oil changes.

I was doing the every-other-oil-change routine to change the oil filter but when I got back home from the XS Southeast rally last year the oil filter media looked a little cooked and was starting to get fragile so I stocked up on WIX filters from O'Reilly's.

I'm still thinking about whether I should change the filter during every oil change or try to stretch it to two and find the engine was force fed baked and flaked filter.

Scott, the FSM says filter change every 6K. I used to change the filter every 3K, then it went to 6K, then to 9K, I am getting lazier with old age I guess. I have never found a burned or disintegrated filter yet, even with Florida heat.

I order the Hiflo filters off ebay a 3 pack at a time. $20 or so and they last a season.

                            New filter at every change.

Yeah, I know what the fine, fine, manual says....

I forget which oil I used for the fill but I put in a fresh WIX oil filter and used it for the 1,000 mile round trip test ride out to Phoenix, Arizona and back, then the long, strange trip back East to a Yamaha dealership in Gnu Orlyeans. The dealer filled it with 4 quarts of super-spendy medium grade Honda dino oil and that stayed in the engine until I got back home.

The oil was still good and the filter media was working but it wasn't as flexible as it should have been. It was 'fragile' and moving the filter pleats or gently pressing on them with my fingernail made them split, crack or break open and tiny little filter bits fell off into the oil drain pan.
