  • Bike won't fire over

I've been working on this little 650 XJ and have it all together. Dropped the battery in fully charged and it turns over great. I have spark and fuel in the cyliders but it just won't fire over.
    Questions:
    1. Could the cams be 180 degrees out of sync with the pick up coils?
    2. I have a meter but really don't know how to use it. If I wanted to check the ignition at the fuse box, how do I do that? (I replaced the old one with TC 's blade fuse box.)
    3. Is the TCI grounded separatelyon these. I did remove one ground wire but it actually screws into the air box then the frame. Can't tell what it goes to because it is so congested in there.
Cleaned as many connectors as I can get my big paws on!

Sounds like it’s time to do a compression test.

What all have you done to the bike? What have you had apart, if anything? Was it running before?

        well

I pulled the carbs and rebuilt them , triple cleaned them. Set the levels this morning and they are dead on. Pulled the cams and re-ser the shims. Only two were within spec. Changed out the original fuse block and put in TC'S. BUNCH OF OTHER STUFF BUT all none fuel or electrical.

Sounds like what my bike was doing...does it have the peg for a kick start? If so there should be an emergency kick start lever under the battery that will fit on there. Slap that on and give her a kick to see if she fires up. I must have spent three weeks trying to trouble shoot electrical and rebuilding the carbs from the ground up. Then on the first kick the darn thing fired right up! Not saying its a sure thing but worth a try
79F with two parts bikes (78E and a 79F). Ran it for the first season all the way through the summer. more work to do this Spring!

              It's cool

This was the little XJ 650. It's cool. I have it running now. Didn't realize you have to prime the hitachi carbs before the vacum supply will work. Stupid me.
