The Timing actually ISN'T Adjustable on the 81, the timing plate slots were cast filled IN and are just held in place with the bolts. The TCI controls the ignition. All you can DO with the timing light is verify that it's hitting at the right spot....there's marks on the place that should line up with the pointer when hitting on #1.

The Earlier models has slotted timing plates where you could "play" with the static timing and adjust it a little if needed/desired!

when i start the process of re installing my cams in the cyl. head.. do i need to line the "C" mark up with the indicator? or is there another mark on the wheel i should lok for?

if it is a different mark should i be aware of TDC or anything?

i think i understand that the cams dots need to line up with the cam cap marks?correct?

and nipples face up and away from cam cap marks?

            sorry for all the questions...

The head I sent had the cam marks lined up. Dots lined up with marks on center cam cap.

The pointer should point to the "T" on the timing wheel on the crankshaft.

Be sure and turn the engine by hand all the way around TWICE to make sure the marks line up still. The crankshaft will turn twice to once on the cams.

It has been a while since I had to think about that, but isn't it the other way around?

Nope Skids, count 'em 4 strokes. 2 up and 2 down. That's why the cam gears are twice the size of the crank gear.
