    de burred the intake ports

opened up very slightley the exaust ports and general de burring and clean up

champhered the oil passages in the cam area and generaly ge gunked and detailed some of the rough areas on the cyl head

couldnt believe how poorly the valves and seats where lapped from the factory.. really poorly done

there was also alot of casting burs and lummpy bummpy areas in the head

lots of burrs around any of the holes

    oh well fixed now!!!

inspite of it all this has been alot of fun and a great confidence builder

still need to have head and cyl hot tanked at machine shop

light ball hone on cyl then paint and re assemble!!!

never could get posting pics down but ill try

hope to have bike back together and running in 2 weeks...

Don't get too excited. These engines are already designed to be quite high performance as they are. They are already putting out over 1.4 HP per cubic inch.

Some have spent thousands of $ modifying them and only gain 20 HP or so. I think the highest output I've seen from one of these is like 115 -120 HP.

Your more than welcome. Glad I could help. (and clear more stuff out of my garage)

I don't know what you think you know about porting, but here is something that you might give some thought to.

i only de burred the intake ports ..

i did how ever get a little more agressive in the exaust ports..although not alot..

i could have opened up the ex. ports ALOT to get them to match with the header I.D.

im not really expecting more H.P. mabey just a little better throttle responce..

jus tried to improve on what was already there..

got the cases washed out tonight now im thinking about the dremel mod for the trans..

i tried to lift the front of the bike with a ****ty old come along and it slipped and nearly caused my demise

thankfully no harm to the bike...not sure how im gonna get this thing stood up or fliped over...

how long does this mod generaly take?

Opening the exhaust ports might help the top end of the RPMs but back pressure is the key to low end response.

If you aren't sure about the condition of the transmission don't mess with it until you know for sure. Don't do any mechanical mods "just because".

I've seen too many of these bikes end up as spare parts on ebay because a lot of engine mods were done BEFORE the owner knew what it needed.

Get it running good and tackle one thing at a time. Too much change can be a headache if there is a problem and you don't know if it was caused by something you did, or something that was there to begin with.

It will usually take a good weekend, the prep, the teardown, the dremelling, and then the reassembly. With all of the breakable stuff removed from the frame, ie. turn signals, side covers, with a good thick piece of carpet you can lay it down and then use couple of long 2x4's to lift it/roll it over with the help of a friend or two.

Speaking from experience, if you have extra gears already ground it can be done in about 4 hours.

should i used assembly lube on the cams and caps when i re assemble my engine?

also wondering if i need to re sync the carbs since ive only removed them and havent needed to open them up again...

i lapped the valves so not sure what else needs attention

is there a prefered timing spec for my 81 special?

cam chain and toolshould be here on wed. gonna start the rebuild prossess....getting pretty excited!!!

                              Assembly lube never hurts.

You should at least check the sync because valve adjustment will affect it.

The ignition timing should be fine unless you messed with it.
