  • Fuel tank lock

    Hi guys,

I'm reviving an 81 3X0 for a friend of mine. I installed an ignition lock with key I had lying around but the key does not fit the fuel tank lock. Anyone has an idea how to open it without destroying the lock? I know that, with the lock disassembled, I can get the ignition key to work with the existing fuel tank lock.
Only question is how to open the fuel tank lid without destroying the lock....
Because this information cannot normally be published on a forum (I know why., don't know what the mod thinks) I would appreciate it when you send me a personal message.

    thanks!

    Picks and a tension wrench.

You could try sliding something relatively ridgid yet bendable into the front center of the of the cap recess area and try to hit the latch to pop it open. The latch move towards the rear when the key is used so it is very possible it would work.

That lock should be easy to pick. I'll bet a locksmith could do it in 5 seconds.

Yup, sounds good, but ........ what is rigid and bendable?

@skids: I bet you're right but none in my neighbourhood. And I ' ve been trying in vain for a couple of hours

I am thinking a thin piece of sheet metal about 1/4 inch wide.

A small knife blade about the size of the key, wiggle & giggle and it will open.

I've used a small curved seal pick to push the latch back on keyless caps many times. It's easy, just push down a little on the cap to take the tension off the hook and push it back.

Write down the four digit code stamped on the lock and take it to a lock smith. For around $15 he'll cut you up a new key to it. I've done this at least once on every Yammy I've owned because for some reason I like to lose keys like it's my job..

If all else fails, use two small allen wrenches. Use them just like a lock pick set. It has worked for me in the past as I had my only key vibrate out if the lock while riding. The iggy switch wasn't an issue as it will turn with near any key, but I couldn't get the fuel tank open. Anyway I ended up taking the Lockett out for a while then bought a iggy switch and gas cap, installed the lockset into my gas cap and just used the key that came with the switch to run the bike now. I'll eventually change out the switch, but it works for the now, and oddly enough, latches into the switch when it's turned. Who'd a think it.

I think I would save the time and head for a locksmith. I wouldnt want to take the chance of messing up the lock.

Are you dealing with a cap that looks like this?

If so, I open it with a can opener that looks like this.

In the right side of this photo note the small tab sticking out from the lock. Put a little downward pressure on the cap and use the pointy end of the can opener to slide back the tab. It pushes straight back toward the back of the bike. Voila! It's open!

Since he is across the pond I guess I was assuming it was the recessed standard gas cap rather than the special gas cap.
