This would be a bike with the recessed cap presumably. BTW, I tried to open mine without a key and after a half an hour, no luck. Best bet is to have a key made as suggested.

I'm reviving an 81 3X0 for a friend of mine. I installed an ignition lock with key I had lying around but the key does not fit the fuel tank lock. Anyone has an idea how to open it without destroying the lock? I know that, with the lock disassembled, I can get the ignition key to work with the existing fuel tank lock.
Only question is how to open the fuel tank lid without destroying the lock....
Because this information cannot normally be published on a forum (I know why., don't know what the mod thinks) I would appreciate it when you send me a personal message.

        thanks!

        Hi Math,
        what's a 3XO?
If it's a Special it's the same cap as an XS650.
They can be popped open by shoving a medium sized screwdriver straight in horizontally under the cap from the front.
This moves the latch back to release the cap.
If it's a Standard flush mount fuel cap, you are SOL unless you can pick locks.
