Strange clicking noise from the drive shaft

I began hearing these noises some time ago and assumed that the rear wheel bearings needed replacement. After completing the bearing replacement I am continuing to hear the clicking noises that seem to be originating in the drive shaft. Has anyone else had this problem that might provide some information on how to resolve it?

possible U-joint failing. Unhook spring retainer, slide back boot and by hand look/feel for any up/down movement in u-joint bearing cups. Also, accumilation of brown rust lookin' powder around joint or inside boot leads to suspect u-joint.

I read somewhere that the UJ joints used in the XS1100 are those used in a Datsun Sunny of the same era. That probably makes sense...Yamaha probably used readily available UJ joints in the shaft??

              Bob Jones's advice on lubing

About 10 years ago I had a chance to talk with Bob about the XS11. I had just bought my 79 SF and needed to know a little more about it as I didn,t know anything about it's faults of high points. Bob asked if I had lubed the rear driveshaft zerk. Being smug I said "oh Yeah", because I did grease it. He said ,"Don,t waste your time or the grease, pull it apart and hand grease with Moly. Bob is gone now butr the advice is still there.

Is there a u joint readily available to replace with? I heard they were very hard to come by. I also heard about the forklift joint, but that it wasn't a direct swap.

                Anyone know?

I found some a couple of years ago but then didn't need to buy one. Definitely a Datsun Sunny

I saved a link to them, but it isn't a good link any longer. The U Joint Store was the vendor. I think BikerPhil came through with that link. They probably still have it.
