I'll check HVC for that piston. That's why I haven't taken my carbs off yet-small, tiny stuff like the detent ball and spring on the choke. I don't have a garage nor workbench to set all the stuff on to keep track of.
Not sure if my carbs have them but isn't there a small screen behind one of the jets? All I really want to do is blow some compressed air through all the ports to clear them with maybe a little carb spray...it's mainly a test I want to put myself through to become more familiar with all the workings on what makes the bike run. Thanks all for the advice! I have a boiler at work calling my name...

There's actually supposed to be two detent balls/springs; one at #1 and one at #4. Yamaha wants almost $10 each for just the springs, if you need a set I can supply all four parts for $5. If interested, send me a PM....

That's what the dining roomtable is for

Seriously though, I have an old card table stashed just for such purposes:

LOL, I did the ones for the E I sold on the coffee table. It was too cold in the garage.

Yikes is all I can say at that mess on the table...looks like a buttload of fun...

Greg, I wanted to be sure about that rear caliper piston size. Is it the same size as the front or is it different because HVC cycle is showing two different ones. The different dimensions I'm seeing are:42.8mmOD x 33.05mm tall and 38mmOD x 41.25mm tall. Didn't know if my '79 Special was different or not but I want to be sure before ordering. Thanks!

I just went out and measured one to be certain because I was getting conflicting info also. It's the second one, http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-XS360...75ba02&vxp=mtr

Thank you so much Greg! For a second I thought I'd ordered the wrong one but after going through some older threads it looks like the pistons are all the same on the XS series. The only different one was the '81 Midnight Special.
Hope it gets here before the weekend since I paid freaking $11 shipping! Almost had cardiac failure when I saw the shipping charge but then realized Obamacare is law now and I'd rather risk it than go to a witch doctor. You pay more for shipping these days than the damn part you order most of the time. At least it wasn't a $1 part or something stupid like that. Wish I could hook up a CNC machine to my computer and tell it to make me the parts I look at online.
You're awesome going out and actually measuring a piston on my behalf...once again, thanks my friend.

Interestingly, only the one at the #1 position is used. If you look at the enrichment circuit rod it only has detents for the ball to ride in at the #1end, none at the #4 end.

                        Steve,
I could use that set of springs and detent balls for a set of carbs I have that are missing them. If Jim is still interested and wants to split your set,I would be fine with one spring and ball then. Thanks, Bob

Got my caliper piston in the mail today...thought about doing it now until I went back outside and the wind had changed dropping the temp. 70 and balmy all day at work but can't have that when I want to do something. Good 'ol bipolar Missouri weather...

Don't do it...the compressed air part... while your carbs are still together is a good/bad way to squish your brass floats! You will at least want to take the bowls off and the floats out before putting any pressurized air into the orifices!

Hmm, I will have another look at my early carbs. All of the late model sets I have only have the detents for the spring and ball to latch into on the number one carb end.
